I have a Dell PC with a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card with a IEEE 1394 Firewire input. I have tons of hard drive space so storage and memory should not be a problem.

I would like to start a podcast but I need some info on what other hardware I will need.

Let me tell you what I would like to shoot for artisticly with the podcast:

A 2 person radio program with musicbeds, sound effects and multi-layered audio clips/bits like on the old Cheech and Chong Albums used to do (background ambiance, character interaction, sound effects).

I know a audio mixer is a must, but would it be best to get a solid, less expensive mixer (Yamaha MG10) and a firewire interface (Behringer FCA202 F-Control Audio FireWire Interface) - or just spend a little more and get a mixer with firewire capability (Alesis MultiMix 8 FireWire)?

I also would like some info on what type of software I need. Adobe Audition 1.5 or 2.0 sounds ideal, but will it work with my current soundcard or is there something less expensive that will suit my needs?

Also, some feedback on podcast software and podcast providers would be helpful too.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

I have pretty much the same setup:

- SB Audigy2 ZS
- Behringer FCA202
- Samson MDR 6 Mixer
- SE Electronics SE2200A Mic

Using the Behringer as my main soundcard and the SB for Skype interviews.

Adobe Audition 2.0 is a dream... you'll have all you need to create HQ podcasts. The cheap (free) alternative is Audicity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net). Its about the same, just a little less.

Its not a soundcard, but a firewire interface.

I went out today to purchase a small Behringer mixer and Audigy PCMCIA sound card to do mobile recording to my notebook.

I came home with the Multi Mix 8.

It came with a copy of Cuebase LE (recording / editing software).

According to my buddy at Musician's Friend, firewire is the way to go.

I haven't connected it yet. It came with a 6 x 6 cable and my notebook has a 4 pin Firewire connection. So, I'll be picking up a cable tomorrow. I'm interested to hear the difference. The Alesis may become our studio mixer.

Our show's format is very similar to what you described that you would like to do.

In our studio, we have the following setup:

Line out from Audigy PC sound card to stereo input of Behringer UB1202FX mixer, (2) MXL-990 mics, tape out from mixer to line in on Audigy PC sound card.

We are using Sound Forge software in the studio.

This setup does everything that you are wanting to do.

We record our show on monday nights and we're going to be out of town next monday so we're "taking it on the road".

Good luck, let us know what you decide.

Oh, feel free to email me if you want some more detail.
