View Full Version : Do the brits make the best podcasts??

As i listen to podcasts in the line of my duty, i get to listen to a lot of casts. as i relax and turn to some of my favs, i always seem to end up listening to podcasts made by those pale faced brits.
i cite examples of podcasts i cant get away from and are just brilliant pieces of production and content.
Hex the Dex- man this podcast just slays me, music with a bit of chat for a link
Radio Clash- music, this is the new John Peel
Whack my Bush- comedy on Tony Blair and George Bush, i have no dry shorts left after this one.
and not forgetting good old Ricky Gervias.
do the british do it best?

well, you're obviously a fan of british humor, or somethin. Plus, no matter what cast you listen to...I bet you could find one better. British, American or not...Because it's not just black and white, not just a scale of 1-10. Depending on yer mood u cud like a whole different type of cast over another...so there's really no meaning in sayin the "best" unless it's the only type in given category. But british podcasts arent the only ones, so there ya go

Ok, I'll bite. Seeing that you are from London I believe I detect a bias!
I work with many people in both the states and the UK and it is all a matter of perspective. I love working with the Brits as well as people from everywhere. Thier music is fresh and innovative. This is hardly limited to the brits though.
The quality of the podcasts I have listened to varies on both sides. It is interesting to note that American media tends to get a lot of ideas from the Brits; especially in TV. It doesn't necessarily make it better as I prefer the Americanized versions.
All in all it is a matter of taste. There is a lot of garbage from all geographic areas. Most people will get out what they put into it.

i can put my bias aside and i know its hard to judge because of cultures, language and tastes but i so far i reckon these are amoung the best in the world at the moment, not just my favourites. When deciding i also thought about content production and efffectiveness of delivery.
not sure if this is the right quetion ask at pod alley, most people here are pod-casters. which is natural.

No, that's not the point. I spend my short time in this new founded forum helping people and discussing. Much of the help is technical and if I happen to have a link to my podcasts or subscriptions in the replies then so be it.
You don't have to school me about etiquette or anything like that.
I also don't need to be told by Nacho or you that I have to limit the links or ways people can get to my show. You have a link to your xml and I could care less if you had more.
It's clearly different than just coming in and blasting the site with some ads to my site. Open your eyes and look above, most people have links back to their shows, some more, some less.
When you become the site moderator I suppose you can kick me off. Either that or report me. If you look through my history I do offer technical help to people who need it and give a bit more back than the snide policing of other peoples posts.

OK mr sound deity- I just listened to your show(320kbps) and 27 mins in your spoken word segment/ending sounds as average as it could be, come on, you aren't really a sound engineer are you? Why would you encode at 320 with such average audio quality?
Seriously my spoken word audio isn't that great, but I know why its not that great, you claim to be a sound guy, but El Nacho has your audio beat by 3 fold, at least the spoken segments.

Nobody said anything about being a sound deity. The quality of the music is what the show is about. I have at most 30 seconds of talk overs and the rest music. You don't have to like it. But that is why I give two feeds, one hi-band, one mid-band. Aparrently you can't read either.

BACK TO THE TOPIC...
As a "British" podcaster (I put that in quotes as I am American that lives in London and podcasts with two brits and a south african IN London but we like to think we are part of flying the flag for British podcasting) I don't like the idea of saying British podcasts are THE best. I think british podcasts are producing good content and I do wonder whether it's getting the attention it deserves (except for Ricky Gervias who is on a different level of celebrity with success on both sides of the Atlantic, if he was American, he would be as successful as he is now anyway with his podcast) because there are a lot more people podcasting in the states. But saying we are THE BEST is, to me, sounds very pretentious and though I think there is some great British content, I think Americans are a step ahead as they have embraced this medium a lot more than the Brits (so far, I personally think we are catching up) and there is some quality content coming out of there and all over the world can't be dismissed.
It's great to see someone on here flying the British flag a bit. I would say to the original poster to check out http://britcaster.com for a directory souly for British Podcasts.

I don't know that British Podcasters are so much at a point of playing catch up... In all cases, and in all countries, Podcasting is still new, and largely undefined (with perhaps a few early break-outs).
But I agree that while it is nice to "wave the flag" for your own country once in a while, it is also a fairly pointless excercise. To say that one country's podcasts (or anything else for that matter) are better simply by virtue of being from that country is blind nationalism -- and I can tell you from my experience with it over on this side of the pond, that's an ugly thing in any form.

What I meant was that, from what I have seen, Podcasting has taken off to the point where people are listening to Podcast shows on satelitte radio and the such, that is not happening here in the UK, it hasn't the profile yet in which it appears to have in the US and maybe other countries.

As I said, to just claim that the Brits are better is pretenious but in the same time, though it might be seen as pointless, you have to admit, here, on this directory, a large proportion of the podcasts and posters on this forum are American - I think it's nice to let people know we are here too! :-)

I wouldn't disagree at all! It's great to have our British neighbours on the boards.
The British podcasting movement could very well have a slower momentum than in the US. I'll take your word for that! I'm just saying that the original poster's chest thumping seemed a little, well, dumb. As he said, there ar some great UK podcasters out there, so in terms of quality and content, the UK is right up there. But to attach a nationality to it, as if that somehow were the reason for it, is ridiculous.
I wouldn't know how many British Podcasters there are that are active on the boards, per se, but I'd be more interested in seeing how many British Podcasts there are in the directory. With over 15,000 listed, I'm sure we would be pleasently surprised to find how many there are.

it's really nice; but no-one can replace that man. I just feel the need to say that I do my best and it's a big compliment since I loved the man and was inspired by him, but not sure I could fill those shoes, or want to.
Ask me in 30 years!
and not forgetting good old Ricky Gervias.
and you were doing so well! :P
Scott: Playing catch up? Err, when do I catch up then since I was one of the first British podcasts and have been doing it longer than most, US or UK?
Have I lapped you all yet? hehehehe
I haven't heard all of those shows but I do know Night Nurse is great; and there are some great British podcasts out there. As are great American, Dutch and so.
I'd add to that list of great British podcasters mentioned above:
Mashup Podcast - inspired me to start and Ross is still going
MakeSomeNoise - great mashup / dance podcast
Drowned in Sound - really good, like NME in audio form. But better, and less fixated with the Arctics
Top of the Pods - Rob and Jon do a great podcast, like down the pub except well produced and more importantly funny and listener driven
Whether we do it best I dunno - there are less UK podcasts since it was originally a US phenomenon, but the quality bar seems to be high since in our culture to speak to yourself for several hours is seen as someone crazy and that classic 'bring em down' rooting for the underdog does have a nasty side - discouraging people from stepping out and being heard?
I'm sure most of the UK listeners listen to me and think 'arrogant twit I wish he'd shut the **** up and play a bootleg!' - the British thing is to go 'who does he think he/she is' so the ones you get don't care what people think, and are very commited, which I'd say tends for a better show?

The British are great, but you can't say any 'one' group does the best podcast since the whole world is producing them.
Cars however are best made by the Japanese. They can't make music for sh*t dick, but they can sure as hell engineer fine automobiles.
Should the British accept the monarchy??? Aren't you people pissed they think they're above you?
If you accept that ho bag as your Queen, you're going to all have to accept Paul Saurini as the King of Podcasting. And therefore an American will be the best at podcasting, like everything else, except making cars and electronics.

I deliberately said a bunch of arrogant stuff in this to see if whiney poo poo head podcasters take me too seriuosly like they always seem to do on PCA.
"I just had to say blah blah because you're so blah blah!"
Love you too!

Scott: Playing catch up? Err, when do I catch up then since I was one of the first British podcasts and have been doing it longer than most, US or UK?
Have I lapped you all yet? hehehehe
Yes yes, you are the ORIGINAL! Ok!!?
For the sake of explaining, I meant that we are catching up in the UK in the sense of popularity and exposure of podcasting and not in the sense that Brits have only just got in on the act....cause as you have pointed out, we know this is not the case.
We BOW to you Tim! :-p

Eric
my comments were designed to create discussion, I think british podcasts are producing good content and I do wonder whether it's getting the attention it deserves, so the point was made to highlight the good work being done.
i think nothing really changes, the UK and US do things diferently. the brits just quietly get on with it and yanks do their thing, both are great and the listeners expect different things but both can be enjoyed by all.
its a bit like the lost/sienfield - office/ doctor who thing, the brits couldnt do lost, we just dont know how to put the gloss on things that give it an air of fantasy and the yanks dont seem to be good at the subtle humur of the office that works on so many layers.
saying that my favourite podcasts at the mo are engadget, yeast radio and hex the dex. the first two are from the usa, so go figure.
i wander what the australians are upto, havent heard to much from them. probabaly having far to much fun surfing in the sun to be bothered with this podcast malaky.

Mr Barefoot....if you think dissing the queen is going to cause uproar amongst the Brits, you're seriously out of touch.

I don't diss the queen to get any reaction out of British people, although I generally love to hear what Brits think of the queen.
I diss the queen because I DON'T BELIEVE MONARCHIES ARE JUST!

I will take you too seriously at this. The Japanese are making tons of fantastic music right now.

Aoki Takamasa and Tujoko Noriko
Koji Asano

The Boredoms
These are some I can just come up with during a sleepy Saturday morning. All of these artists are fantastic in many different ways. Japan has a thriving exciting music scene that has a firm footing in art, and the western music world could learn a lot from them.

I prefer an English postcast over a British podcast. I'm probably splitting hairs, but...

I'd rather listen to my *****le bleeding after an anal rape than listen to a British podcaster.
I've done it, too.
But that's just my opinion.

Aw, come on Saint Patrick...I'm sorry about the Potato Famine, the War of 1812 and all that stuff—but let's let bygones be bygones.

But, as you say. That's just my opinion.
