View Full Version : Who's podcast do you have to trash to get votes around here?

I can't decide which of you long-time podcasters that I need to pick a fight with to get votes. I want to pick one that's popular, but not universally loved. It would also probably be a good idea to pick a fight with someone who doesn't usually hang at the boards here at PCA. I don't like conflict! I also don't know if I should just stick to attacking other podcasters in my category, or go for a more broad, cross category fight. ;)
Seriously, now that I've gotten your attention, I have no interest in picking fights. But I am curious, is there an effective way to whore yourself for votes, without, um, looking like you're whoring for votes? I've asked just about every family member and friend in my address book to stop by and vote for us, but to no avail. Maybe I haven't pestered them enough? Or maybe they think we just suck eggs.
Thanks!
Eric
PS -- If you're really itchin' fer a fight, I ain't scared of you! You're not the boss of me!

Ummmm...With all due respect, how about continuing to do your best at producing a great show that will appeal to your target audience, and to do so on a regular basis?
That’s what worked for everyone on your poll, right?
Tell you what, I’ll vote for you, but please don’t say bad things about my show :)
(I already know my show stinks)

Oh sure, ask the impossible! Actually, this was kind of tongue in cheek :)
I had a little too much time on my hands this afternoon, and I felt it had been a while since someone blew in here and trashed someone for no reason, so I thought, "what the heck!" I'm a new podcaster! I think it must be my turn to stir the hornet's nest.
That’s what worked for everyone on your poll, right?
It absolutely has! I love most of those shows. But they're also the most picked on, so it all seemed like part of the joke. ("joke" being used in the most basic and lamest of ways)
Tell you what, I’ll vote for you, but please don’t say bad things about my show :)
Only if you want to! Like I said, this was more tongue in cheek than anything! But thanks!

Really nice show, but I don't think that trash talking and spa parties are a good combination.
You could really be creative and start locally to advertise your Pod Cast. Make a bunch of invitations like the one in the pod cast. Make them really mysterious where to find out what it's about someone has to logon to your site (make it easy to vote). Then hand them out where there are a lot of young ladies - girls volley ball/basket ball games a local community college/highschool. And other places like tanning salons etc. You got a great demographic -- chase it!

Actually, I was thinking it could be something like a "Fight Club-Spa Party." After the fights, you go in for a nice facial to help ease the swelling, and have a smoothie to take the edge off. Oh, and a manicure can really do wonders for getting your opponents torn flesh out from under your nails! Besides, strong nails are good for gouging! :D

I really like the part about the invites. I was just going to make some flowery looking business cards, but I think the invites would be much more effective. I will consult with Madeline about that!

I am not sure if your show is my cup of tea, but I feel your pain. I have sent e-mails to friends and family, offered free items on my podcast-my next step is to parade up and down the center of town with a sandwich board. I am only six episodes into this but I was hoping for feedback and I can't get any-one posting on my blog site.
I love doing this so I will keep going-bedisdes the $$$ invested in sound equipment.
I will listen to your podcast-oh, if it is video I can't do a long one-dial up :(

Yeah, it's video. Sorry!
And no, I don't expect it to be everyone's cup of tea. Heck, if I weren't shooting, editing and posting it, I'm not sure it'd be my cup of tea either (I'm not really into that manicure and facial stuff)! So don't feel bad about honest feedback! :)
Actually, I'm not really that sure voting here or other places is going to be a good measure of our success, simply because we're aiming our show at a demographic that would proabably rather die than come to a geek breeding ground like Podcast Alley :)
Nothing against the Alley, "I Live here," after all! But let's be honest! With all the talk about XML, RSS, FTP and ASAP that goes on around here... well, we're geeks! We might be stylin' geeks, but we're still geeks! :D

You are right, Eric. You can paint black and white stripes on your mule-but it is still a mule.
Never thought that I was a geek-but maybe I am. I always thought a geek had to understand all this stuff. Until I started podcasting I didn't use the forum-just the directory and voting. I guess that part is for non-geeks and that would be my audience :)

I never thought of myself that way either. Not until that night. Honest story here: I was hanging out with my brothers and a couple of friends at my place a few years ago (I think the summer before I got married), and we went to a pizza place in the neighborhood. We were talking about some of the stuff we were into, like Sci Fi shows and talking about this new thing called the "world wide web," and what it meant, and reminiscing about the old videos we use to shoot, when the manager brought us the pizza we ordered. Then he asked, almost as if someone dared him to, "Are you guys geeks or something? You look like geeks."
Oh, I was in denial about it for a while. Heck, at the time, I didn't even have an AOL account, much less a real ISP. But it could not be denied. I was a geek. Soon, I came to accept it. I subscribed to VideoMaker magazine. I went to Sci-Fi Conventions! I even had (still do) a translation of the Bible into Klingon. Now I embrace it! Bwa-ha-ha-ha!
Oh, and I liked the "lost" episode of your podcast. Lost is one of my favorite shows! Hey, did you notice Zeke ain't as "deliverance" as the Others would want us to think? Hmmmm..

Actually, I was a little disappointed when they found the fake beard in the new hatch. I didn't want the Others to be Dharma people-I was hoping they were an experiment 'gone bad.'
Time will tell. Thanks for listening. I finished part two and now I will download part one-want that recipe for the smoothie :)

If you want to save yourself the download, the smoothie is in the show notes. I know what video files on dial up can do to a person. In any case, part one is a smaller file (10 MB smaller or so), so you won't have to take as long to download.
Yeah, although the nursery thing and the sickness has me a little curious. Plus they made a point of "He won't approve." Is that the founder of the Dharma project? After so many years, could he still be alive?

Looking at how base-minimal/primitive our internet culture is the show you just describe would probably get a lot of votes.

Over the past year I collected many emails from the survey I have people fill out for my show.
Today I just sent out my first bulk email ever and I've done really well with it. I find that if I appreciate people they usually help me out. Since people took the time to fill out a survey, they're usually the special people who might take a moment to vote for your podcast.
I'm hoping that as people arrive in work Monday morning, even more votes will trickle in.
These are words of wisdom not to be taken lightly. Incidentally, I kinda think your vidcast is interesting. You gotta be patient!!!
If you want people to vote for you from your forum post, you should put a link to your cast page and make it easy. :P
I voted for you because I don't fear competition. It would be awesome if you voted for us too, but it's up to you.

Very good point about sticking my vote page link (http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=20829) in here!
I also like the Poll suggestion. We're experimenting with Apple's new iWeb, so adding things like that is a bit tricky, but I could always revert to my old WYIWYG site builder to throw up a page with a poll on it and then link to it.
Consider yourself voted for! I think I've voted for everyone that's posted in here, so I have no problem with reciprocating! My goal in whoring for votes has less to do with cracking the top 50 (or the top 10), than it is about a way to get people to look at the show. BTW, I've also sampled most or all of the podcaster's shows that have replied, and will be updating my subscriptions with some of them this weekend!
And thanks for the encouragement!

I say go for it.
When I went around asking for votes like you one year ago people got mad.
I'm not sure why, but the competition here has always been intense and some people get easily aggrivated. I would say that's a "cultural" quality of pca. BUT there are some super people over here. Don't get me wrong.
Like I said, collect the emails of folks who give you feedback and vote. They'll usually help you out in the future.

Forget about voting. It's backwards and inefficient way to promote your podcast, and asking your listeners to go to a site they don't care about and jump through hoops for your sake will annoy far more people than the questionable benefit justifies.
What goals do you hope to achieve by getting votes? I'm serious -- that's not a rhetorical question. Name them, and I'll give you two reasons why voting won't help much and three better ways to achieve them.

Fair enough, although if you're asking me to justify the voting system at PCA, you should really talk to Chris. See I'm not really whoring for votes. I'm whoring for attention!
So instead of looking at what has voting gotten me, let's look at what the discussion of voting has gotten me. Or in other words, what good has this thread done me?
Well, first and foremost, it has generated a lot more discussion about my show than my "New Show Announcement" has.
Secondly, it generated interest from Alley regulars in my Podcast. This is important, because while the show is not aimed at the typical PCA user, it is that same typical PCA user, the makers of Podcasts, who are now more aware of my show. Why is that a big deal? Because it is the recommendations of these self-taught experts that their Podcast-newbie friends go to when they're looking for new content. That's especially useful for us when someone who feels intimidated by all the tech involved can find a podcast that's not about the tech.
Thirdly, it has generated some very useful advice (of which I'm really, really greatful for), that might have taken days to glean from all the thousands of posts already here. And hopefully, it's advice others here can use as well.
And finally, despite the provocative title of the post, I think my little PCA "in joke" has generated some very good discussion, debate and even goodwill that other past posts of this nature (which did actually intend to pick fights) have failed to generate.
So to summarize:
• More notice for the podcast. Especially among those that are in a position to recommend the show to new podcast listeners/watchers
• Great Advice
• Good debate/discussion
• Warm fuzzy feelings all around (either that, or I forgot to change my underwear again).
Thanks,
Eric

I completely hear you about the endorphines. When I tell our show's hostess that she's number 12 in the Video category at PCA (out of 528) she gets much more excited than when I tell her we have 6 votes in March. Either one is true, but the first number is more impressive sounding! And since she's invested so much blood sweat and tears in the show, it helps keep her enthusiasm up to think of the votes in those terms. Mine too.
Thanks!
