When we recorded with MXL 990s, we used these:

$20 seems like a lot to pay for a foam windscreen for a $60 mic, but I found them to be indispensible for a couple of reasons:
1. I didn't like using the pop filters. I found that they got in the way of our ability to see each other during the show without craning our necks and such. But SOMETHING was necessary, because the MXL 990 is extremely sensitive to plosives. I know you can talk into the side of it or whatever, but the 990 is also very sensitive to room noise, which, I think, makes being able to get right up on the mic more attractive.
2. The foam wind screen actually helped reject some of the room noise, without question. A lot of people complain about the room noise with the 990, and I found that using these foam windscreens to really help out in that regard.
The mic pictured in the link there is not the same mic, and, yes, the MXL 990 is a little chunkier, but those will work well with the 990 - they're the ones I have AND that's where I bought them...
I will say however that prior to buying the nice windscreen, I bought some cheapy windscreens at guitar center (I believe they were like $3 for a five pack) and just stretched it over the MXL...it worked, too, but to a lesser extent.

Thank you.
My main use for these filters will be when I do road shows.
I use a pop scrren in the studio, but it's a pain when you want to move a little.
