Can't we all just get along? - Four tips for a better and more productive IEP negotiation.

My suggestions for improving the relationship between parents and school to ensure the best educational environment for a child with special needs:
1) When using an advocate, have the advocate observe your child prior to the IEP meeting. Share any concerns at least a month in advance. Ask your advocate to connect with the appropriate individuals at your child's school before the meeting to establish an environment of mutual collaboration. Advocates can work with educators and school staff on goals in advance.
2) My recommendation for educators: take parents seriously, and embrace their input and advice.
3) Don't walk into an IEP with your own agenda set in stone. Be open-minded and flexible.
4) Enter an IEP meeting with the attitude that you can find a program that is ideal for the child, that each person around the table can embrace and carry out. A harmonious relationship between school and parents will set the stage for creating the ideal educational environment for the child.

Thank you for listening.
