Very good episode, Jeff. I especially liked hearing from Derek. He's making incredible progress after his stroke.
My mother in law (mil) went through something similar for more than a year. She had an undiagnosed stroke. Obviously it wasn't as bad as Derek's, as there was no coma, or even a very dramatic episode to mark the occurence, but it did profoundly affect her. We didn't find out the problem was a stroke until she was about to have surgery for a condition that could lead to a stroke. While talking to one of her children, a physician's assistant casually mentioned that since she's had a prior stroke they wanted to take certain precautions. Keep in mind, we'd been seeing everyone from here general care physician (claimed it was a sinus infection or an ear infection) to ear nose and throat specialists (balance issues) to neurologists, and not one told us she had a stroke. And it wasn't for asking the wrong questions. My mil has worked in care facilities for most of her life, was even a nurse early in her career, and my own mother has an extensive medical background. And the neurologist she'd been seeing for two months did know she had a stroke. The MRIs were pretty clear, once we were shown the appropriate ones.
The neurologist and neurosurgeon said after we found this out that they wanted us to focus on treatment and recovery rather than dwelling on something that couldn't be fixed. Only problem is, it's hard to understand your treatment, or your symptoms when you don't what is causing them!!!! My poor MIL thought she was going crazy! I'm getting mad thinking about it again. I should stop wrting about it.
Sorry for my tengent. I was going to say something encouraging, which is, after all my MIL's hardship, she has made a full recovery. She went from people telling us she should be in a "home," to driving her car, going to church, and travelling to visit friends again. Derek is making excellent progress, and I have no doubt that he can regain much of who he used to be and what he used to do. All it takes is patience.
Great show!

Eric,
Wow - that is a very compelling story! I'm really glad to hear that your mother in law is well now although it saddes to hear some of the details of her route to get there.
Thanks for the kind words. I was really impressed with the interview with Derek. Not only is his story amazing, but true to Derek, he has such a talent for articulating it.
I appreciate your listening.
