Hello,
I have the following problem: I want to listen to podcasts on my iPod, but I don't want to use iTunes for that. I already tried some alternatives to iTunes, but if you want to put podcasts on your iPod, you still need to start iTunes for that. For example: Ziepod has built in iPod support since version 0.99, but it uses the iTunes API for that, so you still have to start iTunes.
Here is my question: is there a podcast reciever (except iTunes of course) which is able to download podcasts to your iPod without having to start iTunes?
Thanks in advance,
Pieter

Did iTunes kill your first born or something? Just wondering why your going so far out of your way to not use iTunes.

No, but it uses too much memory. Because of that, I'm thinking of switching to MediaMonkey (http://www.mediamonkey.com), but I will need a podcast reciever too because MediaMonkey doesn't support podcasts yet. And that brings me to this problem.

If mediamonkey gets stuff to the ipod, then I would suggest using a seperate aggregator, such as Juice. That's what I use and it works very well.

That won't work, because what Juice does is 1) it downloads podcasts 2) it puts them in a playlist for your iPod so that iTunes can pick it up, so that won't work without iTunes.

Funny, I use iPodder (Juice's older cousin) with my Zen. All it does is download the files.
In that case, I suggest iPodder instead of Juice, and thank you for saving my pending attempt to "upgrade" to Juice.

An iPod is totally different from other MP3 players because you need to manage I certain folder structure, and in general, this job seems to though so that as far as I know iTunes is the only program who is able to do that.
There is no reason why you shouldn't upgrade iPodder to Juice, because iPodder is exactly the same, but older, and (maybe) there are some bugs in it which are already fixed in the newest version of Juice.

Juice definately does not require iTunes. I upgraded from iPodder to Juice, and I have never had iTunes installed. Listening has never been easier.

Cool, thanks guys. I suspected that was the case anyway, and that the original poster's problems were with iTunes, and not with Juice.
I still don't see why you can't use Juice to download and then transfer to the iPod via iTunes, or does iTunes /require/ you to sync and doesn't allow an actual transfer? I'm a Creative Zen user, so don't know much about the iPod.
As an aside, a friend of mine has an iPod and never uses iTunes. He uses gtkpod on linux. Don't ask me anything about it, though, as I've never used it.

Juice definately does not require iTunes. Did you read the entire topic? I said Juice doesn't work with iPods without iTunes. :)
Anyway, I found something called YamiPod, which seems not to require iTunes. I'll try that now.

YamiPod is not very user-friendly, and I don't think that's what I'm looking for.
I'll repeat my question: does anybody know a program to download podcasts and put them on your iPod without using iTunes in any way?

Both? No.
But if you're using Linux, gtkpod will put them on. That is the ONLY non-iTunes software (Besides, apparently, Yamipod) that will put anything on an iPod (so you can play it).
The ONLY software out tehre that can both download podcasts AND put them on your iPod is iTunes.
Period.

:(
Are there any podcast reciever developers here? If yes, please considder adding this feature to your podcast reciever and let me know. Thanks.

I have an interface to jRiver Media Centre, which i believe can sync direct to lots of portable devices, including iPod.

Without using the iTunes API? Sounds interesting, but I'm only willing to use free software. Sorry.

Yes i think it does it directly, but also, yes, neither jRiver nor RSSRadio are free....
