I have just started a website and have been looking for ways to increase the traffic - one idea I had was to host other people's podcasts.
Is this legal, and if it is, how do I go about getting it started.
PS - I already use WinpyPlayer in another music site I run - presumably I could use that ?...

It's fine as long as you get permission from the podcasters...but then again Yahoo and the ilk do it without permission.

You mean, offer podcasters disk space and bandwidth on your machine? In consideration for them giving you a shoutout or something?
That's certainly legal, but what are you planning to offer podcasters that's better than deals they could get elsewhere?

No, I was just thinking about providing a portal for people to get podcasts. I'm assuming that would increase the amount of traffic to my site ?!...

It'll increase the bandwidth, that's sure.
I listen to 38 podcasts right now, and I visit, on a weekly basis, maybe 2 of them. And that's only if they mention something that I find interesting enough to jot down and remember to check back later. I may be the exception, but I doubt it. Depending on your needs, that may be just fine for you.

That depends. What would you do to market your site to listeners? I.e., why would people go to your site instead of the podcaster's own page, or Podcast Alley, or Podcast Pickle, or...?
Also, unless explicitly permitted by the podcaster (or unless they release the files under a Creative Commons license, as some of us do) you must never simply take another podcaster's MP3 files or the contents of their RSS feed and put them up at your own URL. Many podcasters keep a close watch on their statistics, and consider that to be hijacking. The proper way to do a "portal" is to link back to the podcasters' pages and feeds.

If you want to do a portal, keep in mind that there are plenty of portals and sites that draw a lot of traffic. Starting yet another will just make your site one of many.
Consider a portal that's more specifc (like all news, all sports, all games) to help you stand out and specifically draw the attention of those shows and listeners. Create a forum for that audience, and podcasting tips and news with that specific focus. Otherwise, unfortunately you'd be just adding to the white noise on the internet.
