Does iTunes automatically download podcasts in the background if it is closed, or does it need to be open?
Im using Windows XP.
Thanks.

If you look in your programs file there should be a file called Start Up. You can drag and drop the itunes shortcut/icon into that folder and it will open upon start up. You will probably have to manually minimize it though. I don't know of anything that does that for you, maybe someone else will chime in.

Once you've got the shortcut in your Startup folder, right-click on it and select "Properties." There's a dropdown called "Run:" which you can change from "Normal window" to "Minimized." Doesn't work with every application, but it will probably work with iTunes.
Another point worth mentioning: iTunes won't download podcasts when it's not running, but if it's exceeded its scheduled time the next time it starts up, it'll begin downloading automatically. So it's no all that much of a handicap.
