You have to have the video ipod that just came out in the past couple months or so.

Why didn't half of your podcasts make it? Were they censored?
Next time, give this a try FeedTheNetwork.com (http://www.FeedTheNetwork.com?pcastalley)
Currently provides links to about 1-Terabyte of content.

I doubt they were censored. It sounds as if he was trying to load video onto a iPod that does not support it. In that instance, iTunes gives you an error message, and doesn't load the video podcast.

Was wondering about viewing video podcasts on your computer.
I downloaded the trailer and episode 1 & 2 from
http://www.portcitypd.com/video.htm
It said on the website that the trailer could be viewed in QuickTime and indeed, it started just fine, video and audeo, but stalled shortly into it.
(Could be the download wasn't completed? How can you tell?)
However, I cannot find anything that loads the episodes themselves. QuickTime didn't work.
Any suggestions? I'm fairly new and have limited knowledge/experience. All suggestions/advice/education appreciated.
Thanks

First off, be sure you have the latest version of Quicktime. QuickTime 7 is required.
The way you can tell how far the movie has downloaded is by looking at the scrub bar (the line that runs across the bottom of the player). It will start out as white, and as the movie downloads it becomes grey.
However, I cannot find anything that loads the episodes themselves. QuickTime didn't work.
I'm a little confused about what your asking. Quicktime loads the episodes, since Quicktime is the player. What the Port City PD guys are doing is putting their show up for download, so it is not streaming, and there's no buffering. The movie is being downloaded into your browser cache.
Reasons for poor performance could range anywhere from not having the right version of Quicktime installed, to busy web traffic on their end to a poor internet connection on yours. I recommend downloading it seperately from their site rather then trying to view it at the site. The easiest way to do that is to subscribe to them via whatever podcatcher you prefer (iTunes, Juice, etc). Or you could go to the main page of their site, and Right Click the link that takes you to the episode you want to watch and choose "save to disk." This will download the file, but you'll have to wait until it's completely downloaded before you watch it.
Good luck!

Thanks Eric!
Did need to update QT.
For the record, am running:
Mac OS 10.3.9
QuickTime 7.1.2 (now)
iTunes 6.0.4
Firefox (browser) 1.5.0.4
internet connection: dial-up (aargh!)
Don't quite have an actual, complete episode downloaded yet, but getting closer. Upgrading QT was part of the solution and helped me figure out (I think) the rest of the problem.
With dial-up, audio streaming is lousy, video streaming impossible, so was trying to download the complete file. But for some reason, iTunes kept trying to stream it & indicated a 6.4 mb file (which was supposed to be 1/2 hour of video) was complete (but there was no exclamation point indicating a download problem).
When I dbl-clicked the file to play, iTunes (and QT, too) logged online & went looking for the webpage. hmmm.
So, I went through OS, browser, iTunes, QT and every other preference menu I could find to take out any and all reference to streaming.
It seemed to help. Now it looks like my only problem is staying connected long enough to get it all downloaded.
Gotta love a download manager that can pickup interrupted downloads where it left off.
Am thinking I need to get Speed Download 3 (4 won't work with current OS) for the video files, use that to download, then drag them to iTunes or QuickTime.
So I am still working on the problem. Ought to know for sure in another 72 hours (expected time to download one episode!) ;-)
Thanks Alot, Eric. I appreciate your help.

Glad to help, Arrow. I have a brother on dial up as well, and he reports problems with iTunes and downloading. I suggested he try Juice or direct downloads. Direct downloads work best for him.
Incidentally, the reason that both iTunes and QT launch is probably because the PortCity podcast is an .m4v file (a flavor of MP4 which makes use of the H.264 codec), which Apple tells iTunes to open by default. But if you're telling Firefox to open internet movie files with QT, then you have two competing sets of commands and that is probably why they both want to launch. It's a theory anyway!

Eric -
How is Juice working for your brother? I've looked at and thought it worth investigating, but realized I needed to try to straighten out my current system and programs, first, rather than potentially add more confusion to my current chaos.
Yes, Firefox did open the PortCity trailer in QT and the default was set to stream it. That was part of my trouble in the first post, but I have since, somehow, fixed that. Exactly how I did that, no idea... dial-up and ADD - - - not good combination!
Current status on the PortCityPD acquisition project:
Episode 2 (acquired with iTunes): healthy little iTunes blue dot (download complete!)
size: 743.6 kb, time: 24:02.
Trailer (acuired with download manager) download 'done':
size: 984 kb, time: unknown.
hmmm. Trailer file larger than episode file? Have to look into that.
Thanks again.

Juice sucks. I had the same issue with it that I did with iTunes. (incomplete downloads and innacurate files size estimates, obscure errors with obscure error codes.) The only difference is Juice's craptacular interface. Oh sure, it can do more than iTunes, but if you don't understand the unintuitive interface, then forget it. I still have it installed and will give it another try when I have more time- to see if it grows on me, but for now it's a thumbs down.
What helped me was downloading the newest version of iTunes and Quicktime. Bear in mind that I check for updates every week, so I pretty much grabbed them as soon as they were out. My issues started about two weeks before the latest versions were released for some reason. Now iTunes and Quicktime seem to be doing just great.
Later,
Evil.
(Eric's brother.)
P.S. I'm running OS X 10.3.9 (Panther)

Used iTunes for a subscription, auto downloading 4 audio files (about 20-30 min ea) per day and it worked like a charm. Then I upgraded and left the comforts of a well-tuned website geared for heavy download traffic. iTunes started acting hinky with everything - almost as though my current version is designed more for streaming while the earlier one was straight downloading. With dialup, streaming is lousy.
I was/am still having problems with iTunes in downloading video files - incomplete DL, incorrect info... so for now, I keep iTunes out of it as much as possible. And QuickTime - don't dare open either while online as they automatically open streaming & QT has a window titled 'Apple Content' which really bogs the works.
Got caught in Safari hell betwixt upgrades so gave Firefox browser a try, which works great. Using FlashGot extension and iGetter DL manager, I am finally getting all my files saved to HD rather than streaming.
However, I hear the newest Safari is pretty good and maybe that's why your iTunes & QT work as promised.
One of these days I'll probably have to upgrade to 10.4 Tiger and the search for working environment with begin all over.

Arrow, iTunes and Quicktime don't stream by default, and they can't stream a file that isn't set up to stream. What they do is called fast-start downloading, and it's usually very convenient. When you go to a site, Quicktime and iTunes, based on your connection speed preferences in your Quicktime Control Panel, calculate how much time it will take you to download a file. Once you hit that percentage of complete download that Quicktime thinks will allow you to watch the video without catching up to the download, the Quicktime will start the video file.
This allows users to start watching before the download is complete and not have to worry about buffering issues. If you are having problems with it, there's two options you can try: Make sure that your connection speed is accurate in the QT control panel, and make sure AutoPlay is disabled.
For a different aggregator with more of a browser feel combined with QT feel, I suggest Democracy Player. (http://www.getdemocracy.com/)
It's still technically Beta, which is why I didn't recommend it before, and some of the Beta versions have been a little buggy, but the latest version is solid, and is very close to being a 1.0 release. You can see a screenshot of the interface at their website. :)
