Philips Electronics spin-off iRex Technologies has an introduced a new "electronic paper" device that it describes as "the first complete solution for portable electronic reading and writing".

At the heart of the iRex solution is a new "e-reader" that combines an electronic paper display with wireless networking and a touch screen. This provides the easy to read, low-power advantages of electronic paper with the capacity to get content from various sources (Internet, PC or flash memory cards), as well as the ability to capture user input.

Other electronic reading devices have failed to make much of an impact, in large part because of their closed nature. iRex says that they plan to be open, though specifications on what formats will be supported aren't yet available on their site. "In order to stimulate the momentum in electronic reading iRex Technologies will support as many formats as possible in as open an environment as possible, respecting the rights of owners of content and IP," according to their site.
