I understand the basics of a set up for a pre-recorded show. Upload file to server, people download and/or subscribe.

How does one set up a live show such as RBR or Moohead?

How do you produce a live feed?

I've messed around with Shoutcast a while ago, basically you need winamp with the shoutcast plugin (http://www.shoutcast.com/), you also need access to a server where you can install the Shoutcast server application which receives the stream and broadcasts it, you have to remember that every listener connects directly to this computer, so you need a lot of bandwidth yada yada. The shoutcast plugin calls up the server, and there is one stream between the two, the server automatically creates m3u and pls files for the stream and anyone that connects to these files will begin to hear the live stream coming out of the shoutcast plugin.
The shoutcast plugin allows you to either capture audio out from winamp, or soundcard out, which allows for manual mixing etc. (more highly recommended)

Ok. If I were to set up a server (or a virtual dedicated server, since I'm on a budget,) would I be hosting both my live show and my archived shows off this server? Or would I have the server for the live feed and then continue to upload the recorded show to my audioblog hosting when I finish a live show?

I was looking at the virtual dedicated server at godaddy.com starting at $34.95 a month for 10 Gb memory and 500 Gb bandwidth. (I'm a small fry.)

Is this something feasible for starting out? (I can always upgrade the server if I get some real talent on the show.)

Or does it have to be a "dedicated" server?

If I got a larger server and shared it with other shows, how would we control who was podcasting at what time without hang-ups or issues? How does one transition from one show to the next on the same feed with different show producers? (i.e. RBR and FTL and such)

Thanks for any assistance.

Any advice?

Suggestions?

Anyone at all?

I know there is a realtively simple way to do this and I don't want to have to pay an IT guy to set this up.

how long is the show going to be
i would try on a non dedicated server as cheap as posible a test run with mabey some dedicated lisntners to get idea of bandwidth filesize delay for upload constraints set up like mabey a $5.00 mnth podlot account just as a beta i dont know if it will support the software or not what ports need to be on on the server side for upload for you and download for your lisnters? actually i dont know **** not even how to say **** on this forum never mind ask el naucho he seems pretty smart

I am up to about twenty minutes per show and would like to average about twenty to thirty minutes per show. I'm sure the timing dynamicas will change going to a live show and I don't know exactly how that will work but I assume it may come out a bit longer for me.

Since its primarily talk, I have no problem putting it up in 22 or 44 Khz.

Hey...I apprecaite all the help I can get!

Thanks for your input!

well i would try someone like podlot they only offer 150 megs though so i would keep the sample rate as low as possible they also might have the ports u need blocked anticpating someone trying to use there servers as a hub for that kind of broadcast i have no idea how the app works i say podlot because they have unlimited bandwidth in case the show takes off trying to get it to work will at least get u in the groups and forums and make u learn the specifics about the app ur trying to run

is there a bit torrent soultion for a "live internet show out there" that might be something to look into

I just checked podlot and they aren't taking newbies for the next two weeks (they have sopme type of regular shut down for an "evaluative" period).

I'll send'em an email and see if they offer a solution for what I am trying to do and, if so, look'em up in a couple weeks...unless I find a better solution before then!

Thanks again.

Is anyone out there successfully using shoutcast with a Mac?

I saw contradicting info on the shoutcast documentation and the forums as to whether or not you can use shoutcast with Mac.

Some say shoutcast is only for PC but the site actually had a download for one of the required files for OS X.

I'm con-few-sed!

I just found and downloaded a program called Audion 3 and it looks as if it can make streaming to a server very easy. It says it works with either shoutcast or live365.

Does anyone have a preference of either shoutcast or live365?

Experiences? Anecdotes? Advice?

(This looks cool! I'm gettin' kind of excited here!)

Wow. Live 365 inserts their own advertising into your feed and does not allow you to do your own advertising unless you purchase their most expensive plans.

Nevermind that!

Charging you monthly fees to push out their own advertising!

What a scam!

I have configured shoutcast and loaded sc_serv and sc_serv.conf to my hosting server to try it out. I have downloaded Winamp and the additional plug in required to stream audio. I have set my IP address and set my port to match the config file. I have left all the other settings to default.

When I kick the llama in the *** (start Winamp) it will not let me connect to my server.

Any suggestions?

dummy check....

you do have a static ip, right?
is there a router involved on your end?

First of all...there is no doubt I'm a dummy.

I didn't know it required a static ip but I'll go one further. I put in the ip address of the hosting server where I uploaded the config file and such. Ids this correct or should I be uploading the ip address of the computer from which I am "transmitting"?

And, tertiarilly, I DO use a wifi router. Dis is a problum den, no?

Real lousy shot of the back of my cable modem:

http://www.kurtcopeland.com/router.jpg

Slightly more interesting shot of a cable:

http://www.kurtcopeland.com/cable.jpg

Ok Before you get TOO bored...the cable has one end that fits into the back of the modem in the empty, funny-shaped port with the question marks.

I ALREADY have that other cable in the modem picture going into a wi-fi router that feeds my mac directly and a desktop PC and two laptops via wifi.

The question is...can I leave the one cable going to the wi-fi router for the mac and the other two computers and use that new cable and the funny-lookin' port to connect the one PC laptop directly to the cable modem in an effort to make the WinAmp/Shoutcast streaming thing work? The other end of the cable in the 2nd picture is a regular USB connection.

Is this a possibility or am I technologically inept and grasping at straws?

Tough question. I've never seen that thing before.

Ok. I tried it and nothing blew up but the cable connection didn't register with the laptop. It acknowledged that something was trying to hook up to it but it didn't know what it was.

I'll get there one way or another.
