Hi all. I recently got myself a iRiver IFP-795 to attempt some mobile podcasting next month. Could anyone suggest (or has had experience with) a good external mic for this recorder? I'm looking for a mic suitable for interviews. I recently tried a Sony ECM-MS907 condenser mic after finding some favorable reviews online. But I had to turn my recording level up all the way to get any decent sound out of the mic. Then I had to hold it very close, and got some really bad hiss. If anyone could suggest some mics I would really appreciate it.

This is already being discussed heavily here: Podcasting Hardware < What portable recording device (http://www.podcastalley.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4975)
As you can imagine, there is a wide range of opinion.

I have that Sony mic and no level problems with it - did you make sure to have your iRiver set to "Mic in" and not "Line in"?
I like the Sony Mic - but far prefer Audio Technica's Pro24 which is also a little less expensive at about $70.

I also use that same mic with that same iRiver. I have no such problem, either. At first I made the mistake Adam mentioned, having the iRiver set to line in, not ext. mic. The record volume, however, is set in line in record volume. Takes some getting used to.

I just bought the Heil PR 20 and really like it. Has a bit of a smoother sound than my Audio Technica 822, but both are good mics. Heil is much cheaper.
