I have not played any promos on my show (to date) because I just barely created my own promo. I have discovered several shows that have created their own promo, but are unwilling to play promos on their show. I can see some reasoning behind this (if your current format makes it difficult to play ALL promo requests), BUT... :?
If a podcaster creates a promo for other podcasts to play, do you think it's only appropriate that they should be willing to play other podcast promos on their show :?:

It depends. Although I would probably not play a promo for another show that was not interested in reciprocating. Although if I liked the other show then that would be less of an issue.
I use other shows promos to break up my podcast anyway, sort of like radio ad's. So i'm likely to play promos regardless of the reciprocation if I like the other show. Although i'd trade that for paid ads in a second :D

I have sort of an unofficial policy of playing PodCast promo’s, for shows that I think my audience will enjoy, on my show…without asking for reciprocation. The way I figure it, my show is very specifically targeted towards runners, and I’m not convinced that anyone else would be interested in listening to my show. As such, I “promo†my show only on running websites and at road races…but I do like the idea of promoting other indie podcasts, for those shows that I think other runners might want to listen to.
My audience is growing because a lot of runners have iPods and MP3 players that they use everyday when they go out for their runs…and I figure they would enjoy some of the shows that I promote.
I don’t think it’s appropriate for anyone to play my promo unless they really feel that their audience would appreciate my show, thus I wouldn’t expect anyone to play my promo (unless the show is about endurance sports, exercise, health and fitness, etc.).
Anyway...that's what I think about it.

I tend to plug podcasts and blogs that I find in my web log as referral sites -- they link to me and send me traffic. But rather than playing promos (which I don't think any of them have), I instead listen to their podcasts and then personally recommend them to my listeners. Takes a little more work, but I think the personal referral is more useful to them. Also, it tends to limit the plugged podcasts to those that are consistent with the topic of my podcast -- travel.

I have a ten minute show, and sometimes it’s pretty hard to squeeze it down to ten minutes. I simply can’t play a two minute promo – I’m not going to devote 20% of my show to someone else’s show, no matter how much I like it.
If I had a half hour show, that would be a different thing.
I’m guessing shorter spots would get played more often. I have a 58 second promo, just one, and it’s been played in quite a few shows. I think I’ll work on a 30 second one and see if that gets even more traction. (I’ve also got an idea for a two minute one, but wouldn’t expect that to be played very often.)
In the meantime, I have a page full of recomended podcasts on my site, which I update from time to time.

I basically have 2 conditions.
it's either / or . . .
1. you have to be willing to play my promo if i play yours.
2. you are a friend of mine.

In a word, NO. I decide what promos and what shows I want to associate myself with. I won't play a promo for a show just because it plays my promo. I have to like the show and respect the host.
Typically I'll do my own promo for a show I like. If the other guy wants to send me his promo, or reciprocate -- that's fine, but I'm not keeping score.
And I don't do promos very often -- maybe once in four of five shows. Some people play a lot of promos, back to back and in every show. That sounds a lot like commercial radio to me.

Okay, you asked for it, I did play your promo.(I had to take out he f bomb) I do not expect you to return the favor. Finding your show triggered a segment for my show which led me to play your promo. Hope I didn't offend.
