I've just started working with video and I use adobe premiere as an editing platform. From there I export my projects to mpeg and then I'm stuck. I've found a program that allows me to convert to mpeg4 and change the ratio to 320x240. I can play it in itunes but I can't drag it to my video ipod. Do I *have* to buy quicktime pro for the final conversion or is there another option to get my video on the ipod?

...Seth you don't have to buy QuickTime BUT if you do have it and use it for conversion, chances are it will work on the iPod with video. I use Handbrake on the Mac which does a good job. On the PC side, I have not found a real good solution, if there is any out there, let me know. I have used Soreson Squeeze Suite and it works well, but a good fast program that just converts from avi to ipod vid would be very handy.

Hey there Frank, we talked briefly at the expo about my plight and I just wanted to follow up with you here. I've been using Videora to convert my adobe premiere avi files to mpeg4. I've done tests conversions on almost every setting to see how they compare and the program works rather well. As I said with you friday night however, my problem comes when I try to drag the mp4 file to my video ipod. I still get the prompt that says my file isn't playable.
So what am I doing wrong here? I fully admit that I'm sorely ignorant when it comes to video compression so I could be doing several different things wrong and wouldn't know it. Is there some sort of basic tutorial I can get my hands on that will allow me to catch up on the basics? The itunes tutorial isn't cutting it. I mean I can by quicktime pro but I'd only be doing that for my video casts and that just seems wasteful (worth it but wasteful).
Thanks for the help, it was great chatting with you!

Hey Seth!
I don't know why the video won't play on your ipod, I do know that there are some rather strict guidelines as to what will play and what won't.
I'd also recommend not using MP4 but M4V, MP4 files are a lot bigger (but quicker to compress) whereas MP4 can compress smaller (but take longer to compress).
For example, The Mary and Karla show #20 (www.maryandkarla.com) which runs about 35 minutes, I compressed as a MP4 and M4V, the MP4 is 281 MB and the M4V is 171 MB.
I do think there will be other solutions in the next several weeks, so it'll just take a little time for those to come out.

I've been recommending to people to just buy Quicktime Pro . . . only $30.00 US . . . its "Export for iPod video 320x240" setting is painless, easy, and it looks great. It's a little slow compared to other programs I use to encode video (Compressor, Sorenson Squeeze, etc.) but it beats spending hours messing with settings.

We use QT Pro for the Dr. Floyd Podcast (just using the Movie To Ipod Export Option) and it really looks amazing. Right now we're just putting out clips dubbed from Video Tape. I can't wait till we start producing our new segments on DV and see how the quality of the Video looks. Now if QT Pro could only do something about the quality of the CONTENT, we'd be set!
