I am barely literate when it comes to podcasting and keep hearing this expression "Podsafe". Can somebody please explain what this expression refers to - is it something to do with copywright?

If it's what I think it is my early podcasts were hilariously un-podsafe!

Podsafe = podSUCK.

Podsafe is just some lame term, far lamer than "podcasting", that people use to describe "clean", safe content.

To me, if your show has the word "pod" or "cast" in it - it's for the birds.

Podsafe music is music that is allowed to be played in a podcast. Usually the artist or their record label gives written permission to the podcaster or an entity like the “podsafe music network”. Most music you hear on the radio can not be played in your podcast unless you get the proper licensing and that usually cost a few hundred buck a year.

Aha!

Thank you audiocollective! I am now relieved to say that I am podsafe! We began by broadcasting whatever we wanted but through conscientiousness more than anything else now get permission for every track we play.

Thankyou for your speedy response. Shame about the other fella.

Says the guy posting on Podcast Alley.

To me, if your show has the word "radio" in it - it's overcommercialized and antiquated.

Podsafe Music is music that tends to be licensed under the Creative Commons usage policy. I think that's pretty much the bottom line.

Hope it helps-

thanks very much Jack - this is something I really needed clarifying as I don't want to fall foul of any copywright infringements and I want to make sure that the bands we promote on the show get the coverage they deserve.

Punky! is a non-profit making show that is a hobby (Sorry over-riding passion at present!) and I'd hate to think that by doing an obscure band a favour we ended up being shut down!

FM ROCKS!

TRADITIONAL RADIO - I LOVE IT!

To me, if your show has the word "radio" in it - it's overcommercialized and antiquated.

And for all of you who are worried about being "over-commercialized", remember, everytime you say or use the word "pod", you're promoting Apple. Silly kids.

I think there's room for all of us and I can't really deny your comments. Mansfield103.2fm certainly rocks on a Monday evening between 9pm and midnight - "Punk & Disorderly" is on! (And when we finally get our live streaming back you'll be the first to know!).

Yeah, but when I listen to my iPod, I don't have to change the channel or sit through a 5-minute ad from the local "Discount Lawyers" or jewelers. That, IMO, is what moves things from "commercialized" to "over-commercialized".

And every time you use the word "bandaid", you're promoting Johnson & Johnson. ...so?

There's no such thing as overcommercialized.

Also just because something has "pod" or "cast" in it, doesn't mean it's no good.

Frankly, "Radio" is way cooler. I wouldn't want "podcast" in the name of my show, but I'm sure there will be some folks who succeed with it so go for it.

When I say "podcast" to people they still go "huh?" When I say "radio" they go "Oh yeah!"

Podcasting is a form of Online Radio.

Radio Rules.
Apple Rules.
I'm also grateful to podcasting for the audience it's brought us. How could I complain?

Um, what the hell is over commercialized? It may be that Jay Lo can be over commercialized, but how the hell can the WORD "radio" be overcommercialized? Especially when it can mean so many different things?

SPThom, why not judge by the quality of the show?

LOVE YOUR GOD **** BAREFOOT RADIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

haha... I think you overestimated my seriousness. Mostly I was offering a cheeky response to TALK RADIO SHOW's dis over the term "podcast".

Also just because something has "pod" or "cast" in it, doesn't mean it's no good.
Exactly. That's what I was getting at, but I have a tendency to get tangential to the subject.

Frankly, "Radio" is way cooler. I wouldn't want "podcast" in the name of my show, but I'm sure there will be some folks who succeed with it so go for it.
I can understand your point of view. For radio veterans, bloggers, and others for whom their "podcast/radio show" is a primary publication, I can see why you'd want to use the term "radio show". I created my podcast as a new arm to my website, so I like the more "techy" terminology.

When I say "podcast" to people they still go "huh?" When I say "radio" they go "Oh yeah!"
Actually, I share that experience.

But paulyb is right... I've inadvertently helped to hijack this thread. So I'll shut up now. :)

“Commercial” remains a favorite way to diss musicians.

Way back when I was doing college radio, it was even more apparent. A new band would come along and everyone was buzzing about it. It was cool to be in on it when no one else was. Occasionally the band would achieve popularity. As soon as that happened the “cool” people would start to complain that they’d “gone commercial.” God **** them for having the audacity to get popular, sell lots of records (they were records back then) and make money. How dare they?

You still hear it from fools trying to sound cool. “I don’t like them because they’re too commercial.” What? There are dozens of reasons to dislike a band, but being “commercial” shouldn’t be one of them unless you’re a socialist.

It's a toilet for pigs.

Thanks for the post by the way - much appreciated! At least it stopped all that intellectual testosterone that was flying around yesterday.

I'm going to pm you something now - no need to reply to it and it's nothing to do with Band Camp!
