I almost fell off my chair when I heard DSC 275. Someone from Sony must have had a word in Adam Curry's shell-like, and given him advanced warning. So he's totally going to stop playing non-podsafe music? No more mash-ups? Is this the same Adam Curry who would normally say "fsck 'em"? Isn't anyone else as surprised as me? Does anyone else think that the RIAA lawyers are preparing a massive mailing to all podcasters?

A serious bummer that's for sure. But Curry and co. have 8.5 million reasons to toe the line on this one. I don't blame him one bit... he's a big target that's for sure.
(says me, hoping my target continues to stay smaaaaalllll).

I'm surprised it's taken this long.

I don't really mind hearing the end of the mashups. Some are okay, but generally they're only as good as the original hits that they're based on.
The problem for me is that the HitTest was one of the best parts of the DSC (it was the only part my wife would listen to and participate as well).
If Mr. Curry had played by the rules from the start, then the Suits would have nothing on him regarding the HitTest (fair use). But since he pushed beyond legality with Mashups, we're all loosing out on enjoying the HitTest as a result!
But, let's remember the DSC is free so it's not like we can complain as paying customers (I don't count the experimental ads).

please ignore if not interested, I'm experimenting with html in my forum posting here:

Promo for DSC here</a>
p.s. How do I turn on HTML under "options" of this post? I've turned it on in my profile and logged out/logged back in. No werky-werky

In a way itz good news. You're either podsafe and indy or you sold your soul and your copyright. If Curry is really convinced about podsafe then he should stand behind it 100%. This is the only way it'll take root.

I'm split on this. I heard the podcast.
On one hand, I don't like the way this is going. Instead of fleeing from the law, we should be changing the law.
On the other hand, as I know quite well, whoever owns the money, owns the law. I don't have much hope.
Podsafe music is a privately owned business. Creative-commons, as far as I understand, is not a business, but a non-profit entity.
Diversify. Distribute.
If podsafe music is the only way out, then Adam Curry should not be the only entity to provide the music. It should not all rest within one website. There should be a network of websites that are privately owned and operated which license out the creative commons license. Strength in numbers. Decentralized. Torrent-style distribution.
Is "podsafe" a registered trademark? If so, it shouldn't be.
I also see a potential problem in the name.
http://www.podsafe.com/ - iPod protective covers.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/podsafe/ - Pod feed Aggregator

I'm not saying I agree with it, I'm just saying I'm surprised that the music industry has taken this long to start making threats.
