What is the etomology of trolling? Is it just posting to get a reaction?

I've seen ppl throw the name "troll" around and am curious as to what it actually means and what it's source is.

The thing that springs to mind is the Billy Goats Gruff children story and the troll under the bridge, but maybe that's just me...

Any enlightenment is appreciated.

When in doubt, consult the Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/)

I always thought it was like trolling when you fish. It's just keeping your line out and waiting for any hit you can get.

I think Big Mike is correct - it derives from the fishing term. Basically, they are hanging around just waiting for something to come their way (in this case - something they can use to stir the pot.)

Statics suggest that many more trolls live under bridges than go fishing.

Northern Trolls or Southern Trolls?

The contemporary use of the term first appeared on Usenet groups in the late 1980s. It is widely thought to be a contraction of the phrase "trolling for suckers," itself derived from the sport fishing technique of trolling. The latter can be compared with trawling, of which it is a near homophone.

The word likely gained currency because of its apt second meaning, drawn from the "trolls", which are portrayed in Scandinavian folklore, and children's tales, as often ugly, obnoxious creatures that are bent on wickedness and mischief. The image of the troll under the bridge in the "Three Billy Goats Gruff" emphasizes the trolls' dislike of outsiders within its physical environment, particularly those who intend to graze in its domain.
