Help with automatic updates

I am new to all this. Had successfully downloaded a selection of podcasts to my new iPod Mini. I have selected 'automatically update all episodes'. I have not listened to all material as yet. Two items have been automatically updated and show in the iPod. The remainder, although still showing on the computer, are not available to listen to on the Pod. What have I done wrong.

go to file (on a windows machine), and click on "update [insert your ipod's name] ipod".......

Is it just me, or does the podcasting function of iTunes lack ALOT?

My problem is exactly the oposite. The podcasts show up just fine, also they are marked in the list shown by clicking podcasts BUT it never deletes the played shows from the ipod mini. The only way so far I have found when the pod overflows is to unsubscribe and then subscribe again to the offending feed.

Uh, seems simple enough of a feature ... Can anyone give a tip?

Also helpful would be ... how does one mark a show played on the ipod?
