I was thinking of this organization in particular:

I would really appreciate some advice about the benefits and the downsides of signing up with such a network.

downside: thepodcastnetwork is too mushy and mainstream, so'd prolly just be a waste of your time to sign up.

Are their shows really all called "The ______ Show"? I'd mark that as a downside.

Does anyone subscribe to a show based on what network it belongs to?

I doubt that it would hurt, but I’d also doubt it would have a very big effect either, unless you’re affiliated with Podshow and/or being played on Sirius.

I think Hittman's correct. If there are benefits to being a network, they will probably show up in the future with respect to acting as a 'block' for advertising revenues and such. And that model still remains to be seen.

Unless there is a downside to joining a network, it may make sense to go ahead and 'network' with the right people where appropriate to hedge your bets.

I've got pretty strong opinions on this. If you don't get any satisfaction out of searching the net for legal and free MP3s then join the podsafe music network or the one you mentioned. However, you'll be playing the same stuff that everyone else on that network is.
