My site is down. Libsyn is down. Is this my fault? Was it something I said? Something I did? My world is in shambles. I'm hyperventilating. Armageddon is around the corner.

Never trusted Libsyn. I've always found downloading any shows from Libsyn took forever, so I always recommend people find some good hosting of thier own. Like Yogi Berra said "Nobody goes to that restaurant anymore, it's too popular". The weight of podcasting's popularity can only hurt their performance.

Your listeners don't really care how much you're paying a month - they want a quick download. If getting the show is too slow or difficult they probably won't be listening in the future.

Not that your own hosting can't go down. Our site was down for a while and then slow for a few days because of the L.A. power outage last week.

haptran, i know you're new, but you have to understand something. podcasting isn't just a hobby for many folks out there. it is a way of earning income.

podcasters like myself are experiencing increased listenership, and possibly will have a chance to earn sponsorship in the future (no matter how much it is). when our files are being held at libsyn, and our listeners can't download, it looks poorly upon us as the podcasters since the average listener could care less who or what libsyn is........

not all podcasters are in the same position where you are where you could care less.

*and to the rest who are using this terrible service* did you get an email apology or warning? i sure as hell didn't!

Just for informational purposes, of course....they posted an explanation on their blog. And secondly, I don't think there's a hosting facility in the world that would promise 100% up-time. I've begun to breathe normally again, and able to see things a little more rationally. I can't remember if and when this has ever happened since I've been with Libsyn (since March, I think). So, all things considered, that ain't bad.

When I saw the title of this thread I thought, “Yes, and the sky is still blue, water is still wet, politicians are still weasels, etc.

Let’s face it, the model of downloading every show from one place is always going to be a huge problem for popular podcasts that have large files. The Lybsyn model just ain’t gonna work. We need a bittorrent solution, but it needs to be built into podcatchers so it’s transparent to the end user. Bittorent is great, but right now using it is too involved for most end users.

Of course, then we’re going to see even more threads asking “How many subscribers do I have?

I just had a thought – how about a podcasting protocol? It would work exactly the same way bittorent does, with a couple of additions and modifications. First off, if nobody else is downloading a particular show at the moment, it just downloads the whole thing directly off the server, as it does now. That way people could get older shows, and less popular shows, without waiting forever. And when a show finishes downloading, either via torrents or direct download, it sends a short text string to a standardized text file on the server which tells the feed owner that the show was downloaded, if the downloader was a subscriber or not, the download origin (web page, iTunes, Podnova, Odeo, etc.) and the IP address of the subscriber. Vola! You’ve solved both the bandwidth issue and the ever present questions of how many downloads, how many subscribers, and where the listeners are.

that doesn't make me calm. It's unacceptable to have downloads down overnight, as this is when a good chunk of listeners grab the show.

This is also the 3rd or 4th time this has happened in recent memory. What gives?

OH but it was on their welcome page when you log in . . .

Of course, it was difficult to see since Libsyn was down!

Grrr....
