View Full Version : PodcastAlley.com Sucks

Ok, it doesnt suck...but you know what does? My Servers. I keep trying to upgrade and find better servers, but have yet to have much luck. I am now with my 4th hosting company with not much support or service.
But that is all about to change. Not only have I started my move to the new "state of the art" hosting facility, future home of the PodcastAlley.com site...but I have also found some REALLY smart people to help me fix all the little bugs...you know the ones Im talking about, the ones that make the website slow and then crash.
I have also found some spare time (if you can call it that) to hang out around here more often. My Mac is off for repairs, but when its back I should be able to dedicate more time to forum posting, podcast approving, blog posting, feature updates and much more.
I have some exciting things planned, so dont count the Alley out because the server needs Viagra (you know, b/c it cant "stay tp" <wink><wink>). More soon.

Soundss like you've got most of it under control, but why not go with a larger company tier1 or tier2 that manages big name accounts?
e.g.
Rackspace
Cable & Wireless
etc.
Surely now that you're with podshow you guys can aggregate everything with one contract and get a good hosting deal?

When the site goes down, I just do something else for a while and check back later. No worries. Sounds like the future's bright for your precious baby.

Jeeeezus, trying to run this site on $30/mo. hosting? It's all so clear now.
I can just see it now, all the cut rate hosting companies are sending around pictures of Chris with the caption, "Do not sell this guy an account. He makes smoke come out of the servers ears."

JESUS. No wonder this place can't stay up.
Dude, you need to talk to someone. You need a decent dedicated box. Try e-places.net. Couple hundred a month will improve your experience like you would not BELIEVE.
Rackspace will slaughter you on cost...yes, the service is good, but you pay many, many times over for it regardless of how good a deal you get. I was a customer with them for almost 18 months but finally had to leave after I found a host that charged half and offered the same level of service.

Our show has been in the 'pending pen' for days. The server is slow and down frequently. The top 25 picks are low on quality so the voting system ain't working as it should. Definite room for progress...
Don't take it too hard, but at the moment, this site gets a "suck +" for effort.

I can understand why this poster makes you angry and as a practicing buddhist and peace advocate I strongly oppose his point of view - but this is a somewhat open directory and we do live in a society that promotes freedom of speech (however insane it may seem) - or at least we hope so. So this guy is fully entitled to his position, and hopefully the readers of this forum are mindfull enough to understand the futility of his hatred and take this arguement with a grain of salt. I think the best approach is to simply let his karma run it's course and not let it get under your skin. Your reaction (and anger) is exactly what he's looking to create - and what the world need is far less of this distructive emotion and more mindfull action. Don't let it get the best of you.
Breath deep.

I don’t disagree with you, Tinkoff, but some things are easier said than done. Gandhi would have gone after these guys with a ball peen hammer.

There are no other podcasting forums as useful as this one, but it has been a huge exercise in frustration. The site is usually either down, or horribly, painfully slow, and I can’t count the number of times I’ve gone to submit a long article and received the “connection refused message, or just had it crap out entirely. If you complain people jump on you because you’re not paying to be here. The site has become less and less useful with each passing week. I notice far less action on the boards than there used to be, and I’m guessing the main reason is the forums are both slow and unreliable. It’s suffering the Yogi Berra fate – it’s so crowded nobody goes there.
This is one of the very few sites I’d pay a small membership fee to join, which would solve the traffic problem two ways – it would bring in some money for better hosting, and drive 90% of the traffic away, so it wouldn’t need better hosting. But with the added resources of Podshow, here’s hoping the place can get back to its former glory, and get there soon.

after plugging this place multiple times each episode, I would hate to see one of my listeners actually come to this board and be welcomed by someone like this....... and then click on one of these links (which violate the forum rules BTW).....
i would have one less listener........

Couldn't agree with you more! Oh my god - I am laughing so hard at that wonderous photoshop image it hurts. I abolutely love it.
Let the idiots pass on so we can get back to the business of making this a great place. I agree the server performance is frustrating - perhaps Podshow will flow some cash love over to the alley. Let's keep our fingers crossed - but until they go public, all we can do is take what's given to us. Beggars can't be choosers.

Thanks. That was one of my very first photoshopping adventures. It took me hours back then. I could probably do it in about twenty minutes these days.
Here’s some more photoshop fun:
http://www.davehitt.com/sept01/worldtradecenter.html
I did it the day after 911, with tears in my eyes. I thought it was an original idea. So did the half dozen other people who did something along the same line at the same time.
And a couple more:

OK, enough showing off, back to the hijack at hand.
Josh, if any of our listeners stop listening because there’s one objectionable show listed here, then they’re idiots, and who cares about them? And this is not the first time you’ve tried to play censor. The best you can hope for in that role is to look really, really bad, so do yourself, and the rest of us, a favor and knock it off.
As to the subject at hand, Ferf, when will we see some of the resources here improve?
BTW, counting money is for poor people. When you’ve got at much as you do, you weigh it.

sorry to dissapoint you there old man, but i'm taking the high road and staying away from any slander you may be trying to throw..... not worth the time....
i have followed many people's advice and started putting less effort into posting here, and more effort into improving my show....

Your site sucks so hard that by the time I typed in www.podcastalley.... my browser said, "Safari can’t find the server. Safari can’t open the page “http://www.podcastalley.com/ because it can’t find the server “www.podcastalley.com. Safari doesn't want to try again either. Safari thinks you shoud just give up. Safari thinks you really didn't have anything useful to say in the forums anyhow. Safari thinks you should go to the Apple Store and buy an iPod Nano so Steve looks good."

THE ERRORS ARE DRIVING ME INSANE. The downloading issue and the fact that I have had SO many votes not counted because of those errors make me wonder why this is the most "popular" directory out there. Shouldn't I take pause when thinking about sending my listeners here to vote for me when they encounter a site with SO many errors and a downloading problem? I'm not trying to be a dick, but isn't asking listeners to go to a VASTLY unreliable site going to reflect poorly on me?
How long has this been going on? What in the world takes so long to fix this problem?
As has happened ONE MILLION times before, I just lost an entire post that I wrote.

We have been cleaning up some things, but I still have a server move to make. Most likely today I will try and roll over to the new box and reset the dns information to point to it. Some people will experience some down time, but that is the nature of the beast when you are trying to move 7000 podcasts, 135,000 episodes, 27,000 articles, 5000 members, 150 blog postss and a partridge in a pear tree i guess.
