I started a month ago, and slowly but steadily built up to 396 in feedburner circulation as of last night.
Some days go down a bit, but this am when I checked it had gone down all of sudden to 355, which is a 10% decline overnight.
I never had such a decline before.
A bit of detail: iTunes has always been 80-85% of my circulation, according to feedburner. Both iTunes and the non-iTunes sources of my circulation went down.
Are such fluctuations normal? Is something wrong with my feed? Have I suddenly earned the disfavor of the gods?

Don't worry Jack-
You do a great show that will find it's niche soon enough.
There are always peaks and valleys!
Make a buncha promo's and send them out!
Get on the forums and argue with the right-wing nutjobs! (that garners attn)
Post new show announcements everywhere!
Promote, Promote, Promote!
Its slow starting but you only have 6 shows and to have that
response should be really encouraging!
Keep the Faith!

Hey Jack B., Thanks for the encouragement.
How long should a promo be? It's something that another podcast plays like a commercial?

Yup-
Its basically an ad for your show for others to play in between songs
or segments. Usually includes your website, a bit about your show and
maybe email. I would keep your promo from 30 seconds to 1 min tops.
When I produce our show, the shorter promo's always seem to work
better.
You are off to a great start!

The 10% drop you mention seems like the iTunes 4.9 to 5.0 update. Subscribers in iTunes who upgraded bumped up your stats the last few days as the new software "resubscribed". Did you have a 10% spike just in the last few days only to lose it this morning? If so I'd say that's it.

Interesting, Jeff.
My stats since last Thursday are, in circulation/hits:
Sep-08 299 1038
Sep-09 281 1021
Sep-10 261 929
Sep-11 289 1072
Sep-12 348 1171
Sep-13 390 1330
And then this morning 355. Although since I originally posted this, it's gone to 373, with most of the increase in non-iTunes sources.
What's the diagnosis?

OK - You're looking at the "Readership" numbers. Those are for the last 24 hours and not a calendar day. Look tomorrow at "Feed Circulation" and you'll see what your final # for 9/14 were. By what you've seen today they'll end up close to 390.
