Can anyone recommend a book on podcasting? There are a few out there... just wondering which is best?

I keep telling people the best books on podcasting are actually books on Audio Production, and Post Production.

Isn't podcasting too new to have much of a "book" out on the topic? And won't it be changing so much that a book will be instantly out of date?

It's a very internet-style thing - quickly updating and changing.

Actually, Podcast Solutions (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/1590595548/104-4959441-1740706?SubscriptionId=02TC6YY5P4XBH0D23KG2)just came out by Dan Klass of the Bitterest Pill and Michael Geoghegan from Reel Reviews. While some of the book will likely be obsolete in a short time, apparently they left much of the book open-ended so it would remain relevant for a while.

Check out a book called Podcasting Hacks by Jack Herrington. Most complete resource I've seen thus far.

Absolutely!

But beyond that, I would think a "book" on podcasting should actually be a podcast -- or at least an audiobook.

Maybe open-ended with "chapters" contributed by different podcasters showing various styles and formats.

And lots of audio clips of what sounds good and what doesn't -- and why.

Actually, that's a pretty cool idea and in the spirit of podcasting, we could offer it up for free. An audio-book chaptered product with contributions by individual producers and new chapters added as technology changes.

Hmm... there's some real value to all of us vis-a-vis educating folks on podcasting....

Todd Cochrane's book seems pretty comprehensive, but I can't compare it to anything else....

Podcasting: DIY Guide (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=themshow-20&creative=9325&path=tg/detail/-/0764597787/qid=1125070870/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14?v=glance%26s=books%26n=507 846)

I have Todd's book and a review copy of Michael & Dan's book. They're both good but Dan's is more accessible for beginners from what I've read so far. I haven't seen Podcast Hacks yet (I did write 3 of the hacks though), but the Hack books tend to supplement a basic how-to book rather than substitute as one.

I also agree with Derek that once you figure out how to get your Podcast up and going your best investment will be a book that focuses on audio.

to tell you the truth it matters what level you are at. If you have figured out the general hosting and RSS thing then then generally the pure podcasting books aren't that helpful. The only part I found helpful in Todd's was his section on marketing. It really matters what you already know.

I personally like the style of the Hacks series but havent seen Podcasting Hacks, yet nor Podcast Solutions.

I've read Cochrane's book and can recommend it over Farkas' book, "Secrets of Podcasting"; it didn't deal enough with the aspect of preparation and covered to much of how to get podcasts and listen to them.

I too will recommend Podcast Solutions for beginning and intermediate use. It's very accessible and doesn't have an anti-Mac bias (important because at least 25% of all podcasters use Macs) that I saw in other books.

I browsed Podcasting Hacks and it definitely looks like a good one for deeper knowledge.
