View Full Version : Illinoise!, Feedburner, Shakespeare Souffle on ABC 7 Chicago
Illinoise
Aug 24th, 2005, 03:11 PM
ABC 7 (WLS) in Chicago aired a segment on podcasting last night that featured Feedburner (http://www.feedburner.com), Shakespeare Souffle (http://bradley.chicago.il.us/), and Illinoise! (http://www.illinoise.net).
It's probably not a big deal for the Chicago podcasters, but the camera guys had to drive 3 hours downstate just to interview us. You'll note on the video that we were extra lame as a result.

Chicago, represent. Huh.
P.S. No matter how they staged it for the camera, we've NEVER recorded a show standing up, around one mic, three inches apart.

Interesting feature. Congrats on the story. ABC7 has been #1 up in Chicago for a long time, so extra bonus points for you guys.
It was kind of dissapointing that they focus on MP3 players to listen to a podcast, instead of the fact that anyone with a computer can listen, and if they have an MP3 player... they can go mobile with them.
P.S. No matter how they staged it for the camera, we've NEVER recorded a show standing up, around one mic, three inches apart. Note this was the last scene in the segment and the next news story was on coyote attacks... coincidence? :)
BTW: Did anyone catch this? They also track how many people are listening to your podcast. The service is free, but if you end up selling advertising on your podcast, FeedBurner will get a cut. That is, if people listen.Did anyone know FeedBurner is to get a cut of any advertising in your podcast?

It's not enough for Chicagoans to have to deal with gang shootings, poverty and the Cubs? Now they have to be fearful of coyote attacks? These blessed, tortured people.

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw that!
Congrats on the interview, Pete and Janet.

That had to be a misquote. How would that even be possible? There is no way for Feedburner to listen in to every podcast to tell who is advertising. My guess is that they are talking about the GoogleAds that they now allow in the browser-friendly RSS feed.

Nice job Illinoise!
I live in Chicago and caught the segment. It's so crazy seeing all of these shows that I am familiar with get press.
I wonder what "normal" people think about all of this.
Congrats guys!

You didn't hear? We get a cut of all podcast revenue. All of it I tell you!
Seriously, that was waaaaaay off base. The reporter had asked a couple of our folks about our business model, and they explained that our primary source of revenues is managing ads in feeds for publishers who want them in their feeds. He failed to understand the difference between blog/site feeds and podcast feeds, and just assumed we were magically taking money out of podcasters pockets somehow.
Nope, don't worry. Our podcast stuff is (and will remain) free, it's not a source of revenue for us today. Not that we're against money - we hear it's nice, and it lets you buy stuff. But our revenues today are generated on text feeds, not podcast feeds. Our podcast services (smartfeed, smartcast) are just services we think are cool to offer and let people get a sense of what else we can do.
That said, you're always welcome to send us a cut of your advertising dollars. ;)

wow, i am amazed! rick, thanks for replying! I never thought that companies actually read these boards! now if only mr. jobbers could come in here and clean up all of our questions about why 4.9 is lacking the features that the podcasters wanted.....

Hey Rick,
Good to know you bounce around the boards here. One more reason why I love you guys at Feedburner. I'm also glad that I won't need to send you a check if I get a sponsor. The postage would be more than the amount of the check! :) ... now if I only knew more about SQL and the like for the network admin position you have available...
