If there was a podcast of the city you live in, what would you want it to include?
I'm considering one where I live and some thoughts are:
Event calendar
Restaurant review (1 per episode?)
Unexplored areas to check out
etc... make it a weekly podcast or something. If there was a podcast
of your area, what would you want to be in it?

that’s a cool idea! We do some of that in our show but it isn’t focused on it. We do sound seeing tours of the major events. we only really go to taco bell for food though. We also use our gps to find cool places that others have found around our town. geocaching.com may help with that, you can put the coordinates in google earth to get directions if you don’t have a gps. Good luck and if you want to check out our show for more ideas go for it.

We are in development on a podcast that is exactly what you are talking about. "This Week in Houston" will launch early next month. You sound like you are on the right track... ours includes the stuff you mentioned along with interviews of people making news in Houston.

meant to reply but hit new topic...
I actually registered SpringfieldPodcast.com and may try to sell it to the radio stations, tv stations, etc. in the Springfields of the USA. There are at least 3 of them that I know of... maybe the Simpsons producers would be interested. They could do a podcast as if it was from Homer and the rest of the gang.

These are great ideas and have a great deal of potential. Don't underestimate the power of a niche. While you won't have big numbers like podcasts that have a broader audience, you often get very loyal listeners. Unfortunately, I think small numbers often deter some from starting local podcasts. My daily show averages only 80-100 listeners a day, and I started in February. So long as you have a passion for it, it doesn't matter how many people listen, anyway.
If you are interested in making money, there is huge potential for sponsorship and advertisers in local podcasts... if for nothing more than the fact you are reaching listeners in their own backyards.

I think I heard recently that there are more cities with the name of "Sprinfield" than any other in the US.

I do that in the city of Long Beach, Ca. http://www.lbpodcast.com
Only two shows right now, but I do plan on having a weekly event calendar, maybe some opinions on news items.
