I unsubscribe from a podcast and then the podcaster sends me an email asking why I unsubscribed.

Where did the podcaster get my email from? I would love to have the emails of my subscribers- that would be great to keep in touch with them.

WHOA!

I have no clue... Are you sure that is how he knew? That is a little wild.

I'm 100% certain.....the email address I used was different than the one I normally used.

Not saying this is a bad thing. I would like to know how to get the email addresses from my listeners too.

First, I'd like to know HOW they know...

Second, I'd like to know why only certain people have access to that information from Apple.

Did you ask how they knew? And what show was it, you can PM me that if you want, I'd like to know if it is one I know has an affiliation with Apple already.

As a listener I would love to know the answer to this.

quick return on that email explaining where the podcaster got my email address from...

They didn't have my EXACT email address-- apparently the podcaster got my "address" (IP or URL don't know?) in their visitor weblogs appear each time the MP3 file was downloaded- the podcaster noticed my address missing in their recent report and then emailed me with a random name before the @ sign.

Jeesh- who knew

Anyone could do the same- visitor weblogs always show URLs and IPs that download files- MP3 or not. Not a sure method but in this case it worked.

Not so sure that is a good tactic. I understand that the podcaster means well, to get feedback on how to promote their show better, or how to improve things.

But it will cause a lot of listeners to suddenly think that show, and maybe many other podcasters are somehow 'spying' on listeners.

Not sure that will pan out to a benefit in the end ... the internet has shown that users have a high level of paranoia about these things. :)

Derek - I agree - not a good thing. BUT I just can't imagine many podcasters going to that length. Maybe if one had 20 listeners it would be managable. Then I again, I suppose one could write a script.....hmmm. It's borderline intrusion. The policy I always adopt with other websites as well is they are free to recieve emails from me if they actively signed up for a mailing list or something. Otherwise you run the risk of being 'internet rude'.

Heck, what's a person to say anyways on why they unsubscribe. It's not that they hate your show and think you suck (thd ey disubscribe), it's most likely the reason we all unsubscribe to shows from time to time - we just find that we tend to reach for other other shows first. If the show finally ends up below the 'listener capacity line' it's usually time to unsubscribe.

Do you host the DVSHow from a computer that you surf the net from? I'm trying to figure out the connection between your IP address and your show's or you email addreses' domain?

If someone was subscribed to this show (who's was it?) I don't see how they'd email most podcast listeners by knowing just an IP address.

wow, that's scary! what, did he have only 3 subscribers when you were subscribed?

The success rate of that sort of e-mailling finding the intended target would have to be really, really, really, REALLY low. I can't imagine that it's worth even trying.

Now on a second thought. Having opt-in feedback thing where feed managers like podnova or the soon to come MyAlley could ask people who unsubscribe from your cast why, would be really interesting.
