I'm almost ready to do it.......

I need some advice though......

Should I keep my domain with my current host, and just move my .mp3's over, or should i just move everything over to libsyn.....

I know if i go to move my domain, i will definitely experience an outtage, but for how long is the question.... oh, and i get billed $5 for them accepting my domain..... hmmmm.......

Definitely keep the domain.

We just finished swapping over monday.

Fairly painless, although the upload speeds were somewhat disappointing.

Currently, we're hosting the mp3s only over there, and it has helped stop the bandwidth drain on our main host. We are concerned with slower download speeds as well, but since most use a podcatcher, it shouldn't matter too much...

Overall, very pleased with the process, especially the id3 tag editor.

I switched to Libsyn pretty early on, once the bandwidth started ramping up. Overall pretty pleased, they have some growing pains and get sluggish here and there, but to not worry about bandwidth, and to do it at such a low cost, makes it worth it.

Definitely keep the domain.

Seconded. I like having services tailored to each element and control over how they work individually.

I am in the same boat....almost ready to dive in. I love the idea of getting stats (does that work if you only move over your MP3s?) and the unlimited bandwidth is a big plus. My question is how many shows can you have on their servers? It seems like the smallest account is only 100MB what do you do with your old shows?

I'm just a little leary of so many podcasts being hosted by the same company. If it goes down...ouch...that is alot of the podcast market out of the picture.

I just signed up with Libsyn to start hosting some of our show. I also have a backup host in case Libsyn craps out. But both plans I got on have decent bandwidth limits and should be adequate.

The hard part is that my feed is all screwed up becuase I had to delete all my shows off the old server. :(

We moved to Libsyn a few weeks ago and we're pretty pleased with them. They do offer statistics if you only move your mp3's over. They even create the correct enclosure code for your mp3's for you to paste into your rss feed. You only need to replace your original enclosure tag with the one from Libsyn and you're there. Very smooth.
We use the 100Mb for storing two shows, the older shows are up on our regular server. If we release a new show, we only replace the enclosure tag on the 'third' show to point back to our own server and that's it. This works out pretty good since the bulk of the downloads occur in the first week of a new release.

I'm just a little leary of so many podcasts being hosted by the same company. If it goes down...ouch...that is alot of the podcast market out of the picture.

Well I guess that same argument can be used in favour of Libsyn because if they mess up, a lot of people will be screaming at them and they would defenately want to avoid that.

That's 100MB of new material per month. They automatically archive your files to lower-speed servers after 30 days, and there are no limits on the amount of old material you can keep hosted with them.

Okay Im now in the same situation after one show.... my bandwidth is through the roof!!
So now Im looking at transferring the mp3 files to an unmetered server.
From all what I have read on this forum it seems Libsyn may be the way to go. Does anyone know of any other serers they would reccomend (unmetered) before I sign up?

Any help is majorly appreciated right now as I have to get transferred ASAP or I may hit bankruptcy!!

Libsyn has been great so far!! I am just concerned as they get more popular they will not be able to scale without adding additional revenue streams to thier mix ie: commercials at the begining or end of our shows. That would Suck!!

That is a very valid concern..... especially if I were to pay for a year or two upfront. I would be quite upset to do that and then get nailed with an advertisement on my show I didnt put there myself... I saw another link to startlogic.com and to be honest they are looking quite appeaing... 100 gigs of transfer per month, between them and my current server I may be able to make a go of it...

I would think you'd want to keep your web site where you have complete control over it, and just point your XML file over at libsyn, while keeping a copy of your files on your site. Keep the XML file there too.

Then if (when) libsyn goes down for an extended time, you just update your XML file to look at your server instead of libsyn, and you're back in business.

That is most deffinately the plan Hittman, but thanks for the response all the same! Although after looking around at available options I am thinking I may transfer my website over to Starlogic.com, they beat the prices I am paying, and for that matter charging as a reseller...... The special they are running this weekend is really quite good!

Libsyn has worked out great for us so far. we just park our MP3 files on Libysn and use their RSS feed as well. They've also got a really simple iTunes interface to update info, images, etc. Granted, Libsyn has been going thorugh some growing pains, but they seem to be on it. The stats are also good, you only pay monthly, it seems like a great solution.

I use them and there are some "pioneer" podcasters (those who were podcasting since 2004) that use them they will never put a ad into your podcast unless you choose to put it there! They are awesome i use them and I am very happy with them!

The link to this thread was dropped to us today, and we just wanted to start by saying wow and thank you for all the positive support. It still gets to us to hear such great things being said, and certainly keeps us motivated to move forward (no matter how hard it gets).

We would also like to comment on the topic of advertising. We at libsyn are adamant about control. And that control to be, and always remain, in the hands of the podcasters. We do not own the content on our servers. It's the work of the content creator, and we will not force our will on our users. That being said, we are not sitting by idle while Podcasters demand a means to earn income. We have been quite active in the formation of strategic partnerships (http://libsyn.com/media/soundoff/RoadCast.mov) and brainstorming with some of the earliest heads in the game to devise a model that we feel will be the most fair, progressive, and balanced method to bring to podcasters. I don't want to promise a delivery date on anything, but we're shooing to get it out very soon. It's no secret what we are up to: keep the control of what, if anything, gets put into your shows, and how much it'll cost sponsors, in your hands, the podcasters. If you work hard to produce your content, and we are able to provide you options so that you don't need to feel you are "selling out", but instead helping a sponsor with similar goals, interests, and intentions get their message out along with yours. Lets create the trusted bonds. Make relationships. And build, together, a self-sufficient economy without anyone needing to compromise their standards.

As with everything with libsyn it's about choice. We don't intentionally lock you into anything. The options are always there for you.

I use libsyn and think it's great. I know nothing about rss feeds and I don't want to know anything about rss feeds or any feeds for that matter. As a matter of fact, all I want to do is to create shows and have people hear them. I'm no computer expect and libsyn makes it easy for me.

So for all you guys that don't want to get into the technical computer crap, let libsyn take care of it. That's what I did and it's working beautifully. (attn. Libsyn people: can I get a free month for that recommendation?)

Has Libsyn stopped updating their stats? The last update I got was from 6 AM yesterday morning.
