Here is an excerpt from the Feedburner blog...

Support for iTunes is Live
As promised, we are pleased to announce the immediate availability of iTunes metadata for your podcast. This comes by way of several enhancements to our popular (and free) SmartCast service. What does this service mean for you, gentle podcaster? It means you only have to go to one place - your favorite place - (that would be FeedBurner) to manage all of the descriptive data for your podcast. It means we will manage all of your iTunes and Media RSS metadata for you, so that you don't have to manually edit or alter XML templates to support a variety of overlapping namespace extensions. It means that your podcasts will be fully described in iTunes, Odeo, and any other directory service leveraging the iTunes namespace extensions, and that your rich media feeds will be correctly indexed by Yahoo!, Ourmedia, and others. And finally, it means that we are looking out for you.

......

All you need to do is to edit your SmartCast settings to enter a description, category, and graphic.

It's nice that they have some iTunes support, but I'm still going to be manually updating my feed, it appears. They only support one category, and there's no support for the subtitle tag.

I had put in a request that they offer us 2 free text fields - one we could put whatever we want into, and it would add tags to the <channel> section, and another that would add whatever we put into it for each <item> - we'll see...however, as for now, I guess I'll just continue doing it manually.

Very true. If you don't have the channel support, it limits some of the functionality of iTunes. I can imagine this would be hard to do since their support is globally for the feed, not dependant on an individual post. In that case, you're talking about a "staging area" for the feed update so you could add the approprate tags for the show before the updated RSS feed goes live. That would likely require an entire re-work of their updating engine... certainly not a fun thing to do.

Who knows, maybe this is something in the works with a full UI for it. We can always dream ...

I will continue to use the wp-rss2 file that patrick was so gracious to share with those of use who suffer through the crappress. I haven't looked yet, but I hope there is a way to un-check the itunes feed info on the smartcast....
