Wow, that Elm's song is great! Good stuff, Pete. How'd you get permission from these dudes? All the stuff is great! Obviously, Pedro The Lion would fit into your mold, if you can get permission.

I'm very impressed, and jelous, as I'd like to be able to have some great music like this to play.

Thanks, Jayson. For permission, well, I just ASKED them! I think there's a little persuasion that needs to happen, so I pointed them to Illinoise! to see the potential quality of the podcast, then reminded them that all shows are recorded at 64kbps, and were talked over and given appropriate credit to ease their minds about "snipping" and ripping.

The Elms have a new album coming out soon and are always touring ... maybe in your neck of the woods! Thanks for the nice comments ... am trying to get Pedro ... no response ... yet.

Hey Jayson, Pete's right. Just email some people and ask. When I first started playing local bands, I just played whatever I found on the web, figuring if they put it "out there" for free on their site it was fair game. (And naturally, I didn't contact any RIAA labels asking if it was okay that I played Guns 'n' Roses or anything!) But between the pod-philosophies of Jim at Whole Wheat Radio and Jason et al at the ***'n of Music Podcasts, I thought I'd better straighten up and fly right. You'd be surprised how eager and cooperative some musicians and labels are -- they've heard of podcasting and they're excited about it. The 2 or 3 labels I've contacted (for signed bands) were like "Sure, feel free to play ____'s stuff, and here's a bunch of our other bands if you want to play them too! Thanks!"

I think getting to know & work with the local musicians has been the best thing about podcasting for me. That, and having a listener in Estonia, whoever s/he is.

As one of the first to get the invite ... (Just Thanks, Pete!) ... I loved the show, too! Hey, any way to get a list of permissioned good groups like this?

We had The Elms twice at our church in the San Francisco Bay Area! Love 'em ... yep, all of 'em.

Ok, so now I'm gonna vote for this podcast (ASAP). If you check out mine, it will be a fun bonus for all!

Also, I'm looking for topics for the RevTim Podcast, e-mail would be appreciated. Just see the info below.

I did the same for "The Lads" from New Zealand for Rachel's Choice. Rachel and I both love the band and figured it couldn't hurt to ask. They've given us permission to use two of their songs, the second of which is in the latest show at http://www.rachelschoice.com

And I've been on vacation and haven't had a chance to listen to "Bored Again Christian" yet but am chomping at the bit to do so!

Thanks for the compliments, peeps.

Derek, you hit on a really good point here. Is this music by Christian bands? Yes. Could you really tell just by listening? Probably not. Is the music "good" by an aesthetic, pop-culture standpoint? Definitely. I mean, U2's been doing it for years, and nobody's raised an eyebrow. And that's the whole point of the show. Are Christians meant to separate themselves from the rest of society? Would Jesus just hang out in church all day? Naw, he's out at parties turning water into wine, in the streets chatting up his peeps. He laughed, he cried (sorry ... "wept"). If he had an iPod, he'd be checking out Sufjan Stevens (and occassionally the guy who poops while he podcasts).

I mean, if you read the Psalms (aka songs), they're not all "God is great". Many are "life is hard", "I feel abandoned", "this sucks". Stuff happens, ESPECIALLY to Christians. But there's always hope.

Don't get me wrong, there's an important place for praise and worship. Yet, "popular" Christian music has, for a long time, decided to segregate itself, all while trying to play "catch-up" with what the kids are listening to (and often falling 5-10 years short).

Anyway, I've been thinking that maybe I should stop promoting it as "Post-Contemporary music for Post-Conservative Christians" ... rather, "Post-Conservative People". I've also been thinking of ironically-cheesey mottos that adequately describe the show:

"What Would Jesus Download?"

Anyway, keep listening ... we're getting sweet new bands signed on every day: Eisley ... The Swift ...

Absolutely you should. Definitely a good idea.

As for the irony thing...

It won't work. I think that it is almost impossible for a christian to pull off irony about christianity. It won't be read as ironic because we are all too conditioned to believe - from many years of examples - that christians have no sense of humor about their own foibles.

But there's no doubt that the christian community is evolving. I've met a number of very smart christians who make very strong art.

And I commend you for fighting to reclaim the public face of your faith from the grasp of the far right control freak authoritarians.

Dan Haseltine, lead singer for Jars of Clay, makes an interesting comment during an interview in a podcast I just put together for Harvest Crusades where he says that they had a hard time early on in their career trying to perform in secular venues because they were told (by "Christians") that God wasn't there. What a load of crap. Good for them for doing what Jesus would have done and pushing forward and performing in those venues anyway.

If you're interested, the podcast in question is at http://www.godcast.org/mp3/harvest/crusade050710.mp3

Aye, there's the rub. And the challenge. Re-conditioning ... or "unconditioning"? ... people about faith (versus religion). Unfortunately, with a title like "Bored-Again Christian", I've apparently resolved myself to taking Chrisitanity-isms head on.

I think it was the apostle Paul who said, "I walk a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known ..."

P.S. Vox, give us a couple weeks to get the show straight before telling us how to do it better, n'kay? ;) BTW, I just want to publicly delcare that the Vox boys are good people, no matter how your show reviews come out. Really.

Nothing's so linear as to say it's evolving or devolving, especially in the trends that flow from human nature. Remember, the term evolution means change, not necessarily improvement. Historically, Christians have created the BEST art. Even now in architecture, painting, and music, I think that Christians have the uppper hand (speaking from a historical perspective). I think the problem is that we forget that there's a dichotomy between what is strictly for the religious and what is BY the religious. For example, I have a friend who is probably the most creative talent of anyone I've known. However, the art that he creates is presented to the world, not strictly to the choir. He happens to be a Christian right there where he is, in his daily life. So I'm guessing we miss a lot of the "christian art" because it isn't so explicit as to be "christian art."
