View Full Version : A copycat problem...sort of

So here's my dilemma.

1. I've never have listened to Dawn & Drew. Not for any reason...just haven't gotten there yet.

2. I listened to Curry's Podfinder podcast today and heard the Dawn & Drew bumper where she moans into intro-ing the show.

3. CRAP ON A STICK.

4. I just cut a bump like that this week.

I made a little file that demonstrates the problem, and I'm asking the Alley to weigh in.

Bumper Similarities (650K, MP3) (http://starkcast.com/misc/bumpersimilarities1.mp3)

Now, I will not be using this bump as a show opener. Just as a seperator between "segments", and it will not show up every week. If that matters

We believe you when you said you didn't copy them.

They'd probably believe you when you said you didn't copy them.

But listeners? At least some of them will think you copied it.

This kind of thing happens all the time. Back when I was doing coffee house standup, I'd write a topical joke, and hear Carson use it before I ever had a chance to. I don't think he stole it from me.

I bet you a cigar there's one or two other podcasts out there that have done the same thing.

Yah, that's the part that bugs me. The last thing I want is people hearing something and saying "Oh, that jerk stole that from __X__."

Moaning....I think you can be more creative than that. I say take it down out of mere principal. Moaning on podcast is like teenagers talking about being drunk, or how cool it is to get high.

Well. What. A. Shock. A Godcaster criticizing something with sexual overtones. I think you can be more creative than that. It's like listening to a priest talk about rock music, or how cool it is to love Jesus.

(See how that "down the nose" routine works both ways?)

No offense, man, but I didn't ask for your creative input in the direction of my show. You do your thing, I do mine. If you don't like my thing, there are about 9000 other shows you can listen to.

Be it moaning or a phrase or a 'jingle,' my concern is about the potential for being seen as a copycat.

This is a public forum and I'll criticize it if I please. And please, I'm not a child so there's no need to freak out and explain to me the point of your post. I understood it competely. Just as you're free to get on here and post what you like, I'm perfectly free to offer whatever thoughts pops into my head. I'll continue to do so, and attempt to be friendly while doing it. That's what makes it fun.

Of course, I admit that I didn't listen to the promo so it was, after all, just a passing gut feeling given in a spirit of good will.

I think you let it bother you a little too much.

This is a public forum and I'll criticize it if I please. I just happen to not appreciate "humor" that falls back on such hackneyed conventions. Of course, I admit that I didn't listen to it. It was, afterall, just a passing comment. Thanks for the advice though!

RUN AWAY! A HUMAN IS USING SEXUALITY! RUN!

I would never think to critique something I haven't heard...interesting. And yes, you're free to comment in an open forum, and I would never say otherwise. That leaves me free to ignore anything you might have to say on the issue, as it's utterly irrelevant to the question at hand.

I think the D&D "intro" has a pretty large listener impression, it's almost their "tag" in a sense. So it'll probably be pretty hard to escape people who know about the podcasting scene at least thinking about D&D when they hear it. But I doubt anyone would really say "OMG THAT THEIF GET A LIFE!!!!?!?!" even if they did think of the comparison. The audio technique has been used on other podcasts and other radio shows, comercials, etc, so they don't really "own" the idea.

Again I say, do something else. Farting maybe? Okay I'm being a jerk. :P Seriously, I don't think people will care. Most probably won't think about it.

On another note, when are iPods going to start playing mp3 files?!?!?!

:P
