This is from an article in the Wall Street Journal today.

...Apple will weed out podcasts that include full-length songs for which podcasters don't have permission to use. Unfortunately, that includes most mainstream music, since most songwriters and recording companies haven't yet licensed their catalogs to podcasters.

Playing Unauthorized Music

Of course, some podcasters go ahead and play unauthorized music anyway on their shows. Music companies haven't yet started widely cracking down on the practice. Mr. Jobs says Apple has an agreement from music companies that allows podcasters to play 30-second song clips in their shows....

--------------------

I don't think this is generally conventional wisdom (yet) so be careful out there - it could just be a rumor....

I wonder if this includes Garageband stuff.

Yeah and how exactly will they determine if its kosher or not? I play quite a few independent catholic artists and even songs that are out of print. I'll be super upset if this becomes an issue. Probably won't, but you never know.

Jeff-
I wonder if this explains our show not being included. We have always limited our playing of copyrighted music to under a minute, but maybe now 30 seconds is the 'magic number.'

What do you think of this hypothesis?

My gut tells me that you were excluded by a quirk in the system. And you will be accepted soon.

I just find it hard to believe that Apple employees spent time listening to our podcasts and timing music bits. In fact, Paul, I can't even recollect offhand anything you did over 1 minute.

I didn't 'write' the Batman underlying music that we did a 2 minute or so bit on a couple of weeks ago....

I say it's a quirk. Don't take it personally. You'll be back in soon and 'kicking our butts' once again.... ;-)

i'm trying to figure out how to play a few 30 sec clips in a row, without having to count out each one. i would use apple's 30 sec clips from the itunes music store, but they refuse to be dragged to a playlist if i already own the song. if i dont own the song, its all good but if i do...
