Not guaranteed to be bug free though.

The iTunes Download Link I posted above has the links for both the Mac & Windows 4.9 iTunes. That page is updated for podcasts.

However as of 4:40 AM Eastern Time the main web page for iTunes still reflects iTunes 4.8 here:

And they've hidden the Podcast directory.

I found it by going to Movie Trailers, then Soundtracks, and you'll see the button.

here is a direct link to the directory: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewGenre?id=26

Thanks Underground Minds!

Early Release of iTunes means that there is still 2 more early July Apple announcements coming. iTunes Phone and iPods.

It seems that Dave Winer was the Only one that predicted that iTunes would be out today!

This will be HUGE for Apple. They are way ahead and setting the standard.

It will be interesting to hear what Craig has to say after actually using iTunes 4.9.

I wonder if the Mac & Windows version are the exact same?

The only thing I was surprised by was that the Windows version is out at the same time. Good that they are out at the same time.

It is a long way from the original SoundJam program they bought.

The site (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) now says iTunes 4.9.

Yes owyn, the download page has said that for hours. However it is the main web front page for iTunes and the jukebox features page that still says and reflects iTunes 4.8. Hopefully it will change later today:

iTunes with PodCast support Released

06/28/2005

Apple on Tuesday released a new version of its iTunes jukebox software. iTunes 4.9 is available now through Software Update and weighs in at 9.9 MB:

"With iTunes 4.9, you can now browse and subscribe to podcasts from within the iTunes Music Store. Podcasts are frequently updated radio-style shows downloadable over the Internet. You can also transfer podcasts to iPod, for listening on the go."

The Podcasting Page is the interesting one:

"Podcasting. The next generation of radio

Step 1. Find your favorites. Free.
Browse, sample and subscribe to thousands of free podcasts from the iTunes Podcast Directory.

Step 2. Manage podcasts.
Organize, rate and let iTunes update your growing podcast collection automatically.

Step 3. Sync shows to go.
Download podcasts to your iPod and listen to your favorite shows anytime, anywhere.

Freedom is as good as it sounds. Imagine listening to your favorite talk show on a spur-of-the-moment bike ride. Hearing movie reviews in line at the box office. Catching the 11:00 news at 6:33. Imagine never again missing the unmissable. Choose the time. Choose the place. Choose the show. Save for later or listen now. Podcasting makes it possible. iTunes makes it easy.

Radio Is Finally Free

Podcasting is radio your way. Defy programming schedules and listen to whatever you want, whenever you want — and on your iPod — wherever you want. Podcasts are radio-style shows — some from major media, others from passionate individuals — delivered over the Internet to your computer. Unlike streaming audio, which requires you to listen in real time, podcasting lets you control how and when you hear your favorite shows.

Cast of Thousands
Until now, searching for podcasts was like scanning for radio stations in a strange city — except you’d be browsing thousands of podcasts in a teeming metropolis called the Internet. And if you wanted to subscribe to a podcast, well, you needed additional software to keep everything up to date. There had to be an easier way. Enter iTunes and iPod, with built-in podcast support.
Welcome to the Golden Age of Podcasting

Now you can easily find and subscribe to free podcasts from one of the largest directories on the web — the iTunes Podcast Directory. Featuring over 3,000 free podcasts from favorites such as ABC News, Adam Curry, ESPN, KCRW and more, the Podcast Directory puts all the best podcasts in one place. Once you subscribe to a podcast, iTunes automatically checks for updates and downloads new episodes to your computer. When you sync your iPod, all your podcasts come along for the ride. You get on-demand radio, delivered automatically. All from the world’s best digital jukebox.

Hello All,

Yes, iTunes 4.9 is out and as expected big media rules the air waves! Though I'm glad to see D&D and TWIT and others make it to the "Top Podcast's" but AL Franken, ESPN Radio? Give me a break!

We've been saying all along that big corporate media is going to take over the essence of Podcasting and today we just got a real taste of what's here and what's here to stay!

Firehouse Radio is featured in the "Public Radio" section. Of course the Featured Public Radio Podcast's are all Big Media (e.g. CBC, KCRW and NPR).

I'm glad WE all worked to get Podcasting where it is today. Unfortunetaly, iTunes 4.9 is going to smash the Pioneers (yes all 4000 of us) to hell! Buried in the mix of amateurs and newbe's.

So today I'm gong to start a new Podcast called "Queer Eye for the Fire Guy!" At least maybe I'll get on the front page. It's worth a try!

Funny isn't it? I expected this though. I have no idea why there is a need to promote stuff that already is big. I mean, the whole concept of podcasting... ISN'T what is on the front page, for the most part.

How hard would it have been to just pull in the OPML from Podcast Alley, or several of the directories...

Then let the people figure out what they like. Not shove a ton of already popular radio stations on folks...

Disney is sure the main media outlet in the mix. Disney brand podcasts, ESPN, ABC ... all owned by Disney.

Well said. I guess it's up to gravity now. The grass is being trimmed from grass-roots podcasting. We'll see how many new podcasters get into the mix. If we see enough hype that contains the same flavor we have been seeing up until this point ("Traditional media is doing it, but these amatures are really doing something great here"), the grass can continue to grow and take seed. Unfortuately, the people that will be doing those stories will be the same folks promoting their own traditional media podcasts.

Yeah, I also noticed that AC got most of his podsquad up on the Music Store front page. Because Gilmore Gang really deserves to be there.

Having this iTunes download problem (http://www.fixya.com/support/t1051271-itunes_downloading_error) does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thank you,
Jul.
