Apple plans special event next month, new iPods likely
By AppleInsider Staff, Published: June 24, 2005, 04:30 PM EST
Apple Computer is distributing media alerts and invitations to a special event that will take place on or before Thursday, July 7th, but the company is not yet offering details.
Apple news site MacBidouille is one of several French publications that claims to have received a media alert pertaining to the event. It's noted that a similar message was presented to the publication just prior the Oct., 2004 Apple music event that saw the launch of the iPod photo.
According to the web report, Apple is asking the media to prepare for new product announcements on or before the first Thursday in July.
Industry sources believe the event may very likely coincide with the planned high-profile launch of iTunes 4.9 with Podcasting support. Sources had previously stated that the software was due for launch by the first week of July.
Sources tell AppleInsider that the event could also play host to new iPod offerings, which may include second-generation iPod shuffles and possibly fifth-generation iPods.
It has not been stated where the event will take place, but last year Apple utilized San Jose's California Theater to introduce the iPod photo in a similar media event.

Heard on the California grapevine, Tuesday is the big day for iTunes and podcasting. The client will be released and Apple will announce a big corporate content partnership. Still waiting for confirmation on who the partner is.

Jellicle, which Tuesday are you talking about? June 26th or July 5th?
It may or may not be Tuesday, although Apple has made announcements on Tuesdays before so I wouldn't be surprised if it was Tuesday.
No surprise either about corporate partners for Apple on iTunes content. They already have a lot of those and several content provider podcasting partners are already known.
Of course there will be the inevitable bugs in the first release of iTunes 4.9 followed by the inevitable bug fix for it.
Stay tuned...

AC said "Tuesday or Wednesday" in his Gnomedex 5 keynote which is available on DSC-2005-06-25. The implication was next week, but, it was not clearly stated. Could be the week after just as easily.

Thanks Owyn. We may know more in the way of other sources later today. Maybe it's the Apple special event next week although I wonder if Apple will announce both New iPods & iTunes at the same time. However multiple product announcements have happened before at a Apple special event.

Apple might hold event on random day at undisclosed location; only the French invited
Apple might be launching new products at a special event on or before July 7th, as reported by a French Mac website and then translated, regurgitated, sliced, diced, and posted on an American Mac rumor site. However, the planned location of the event is unknown even by those who claim to have been invited, as is the actual date of the event, which could take place either on, or before, July 7th. Additionally, the only journalists who claim to have been invited thus far are all French.
Dosage: Apple launching a product at an undisclosed location on a random day and only inviting the French but not telling them when or where to show up? Yep, the circus is back in town. Get set for increasingly bizarre rumors, predictions, and hype, right up until the moment Apple actually announces something.

In other news, a leading Mac journal in Estonia is reporting that Steve Jobs may eat a hamburger for lunch today.
According to a Google translation of the rumor site Mac Gurgle Argh!, sources inside Apple report that the desk drawers of several top executives -- which may include CEO Steve Jobs -- have had a growing number of ketchup packets for several weeks. Yesterday the ketchup count "crossed the threshold," according to one developer, who said that Jobs was known at least once to bring in take-out from Johnny Rockets. "The guy was a machine, man. He ate at his desk, pouring another ketchup packet on between each mouthful, while he had a queue of programmers walk through his office so he could yell at us. That was a working lunch for him."
Apple's Public Relations office refused to confirm or deny the widespread hamburger speculation. "You need to keep in mind that Apple's always innovating. Could Jobs have a burger today? Sure, he might have a burger. People love burgers, and so do we. But this might be the week Jobs orders in Chinese, and puts all his ketchup in his shrimp fried rice and moo goo gai pan. He's crazy that way. He's an innovator, and that's what Apple is all about."

Back to reality now:
Reuters is reporting that Cingular Wireless is considering selling the Motorola iTunes-enalbed cell phone. RBC Capital analyst Mark Sue said in a recent research note that Apple and Cingular were working out final details on revenue sharing.
-
Meanwhile, several news sites are reporting that Apple will be launching the new Phone next Tuesday with availability on July 4th. Meanwhile, other reports claim that Apple is hosting a special media event on July 7th. It's unclear if the two events will be related or are separate releases.
