Hi Craig,

I had a quick question concerning a post by you. Someone was asking about a setup and you mentioned some things they would need. One thing was a cable for the tape out to line in for the mixer. I use a Behringer UB802 connected to my iRiver. I was just wondering if there was a difference in quality/sound that comes from using the tape out instead of the main out connection. In addition, is there difference in sound when using XLR to 1/4 for the mic instead of XLR to XLR?

Here's the original post I'm referencing:

Thx

i used to work in a recording studio. and XLR to XLR is generally considered better sonically than XLR to 1/4"

however, once you're show is converted into mp3 format, i'm sure that it totally doesn't matter.

I'd have to agree with this. I can't really see the difference being anything noticeable once you compress down to MP3 format.

I also have a UB802 with a connection from the line-out to my mixer and the major contributing factor with sound that I have have nothing to do with the connections/hardware.

Here are the sound challenges I face:
- Individual mic levels (making sure the volume on the guest mic and mine are close)
- Overall mixer volume (too much post production amplification degrades sound)
- Background noise (my computer fans are noisy when its hot)
- My own monotone voice (working on that!)

Just my two cents...

If cost is an issue, it's alot less expensive to go from the "tape out" to the iRiver cause all you'll need is a $5 Stereo RCA to mini-plug cable. XLR to mini cables can be more pricey and harder to come-by.

Thanks everybody. I have all the equipment, and I actually have the 1/4 Y to 1/8 cable going from the main out to line in on my iRiver. Just was wondering if there was a difference in sound quality. Been podcasting since Feb and I'm still tinkering with the setup.

And I meant to respond to my own post saying that if others wanted to chime in, please do so. Thanks for the input! I just put Craig's name in the post because I was referencing what he said, and because he eats, sleeps and drinks the alley.

Thx.
