Grant

What is the best iriver., the 700, 800 or 900 series ?
I need one for podcasting., to be used when out and about in the hills, interviewing people etc. And of course I will use it indoors too for music.
Will someone just say " buy this Grant " and " this is a great microphone too".
My head's bursting with all the options.
Thanks.

I did all my shows on the road from Barcelona with the iFP-899. I really like having 1G of space, but never came close to filling it - although it worked great as a podcast player when my iPod ran out of batteries!
As for one point stereo mics (handheld) - I have the Sony ESC-MS97 (around $90 if you can find one) but if I had to buy it again I would go for the much better Audio Technica Pro 24. See links below.

Get either of these and you'll be good to go! I'm sure someone else can recommend a good inexpensive lapel mic - I'm not a big fan of the Griffin iMic lapel thing - sounds crappy to my ears compared to the similarly priced untis you can find off of SoundProfessionals.com. The choice is ultimately yours - but don't get too hung up on the equipment, just start recording!
Good luck!

At this point which you chose is more a matter of your budget than anything else. 512mb should be more than fine for even the most prolific podcaster but for the extra dough the 899/1Gig gives you more space than you'll ever need.
In terms of mics, I don't think you can go wrong with the Audio-Technica Pro 24, but I'm partial to the Giant Squid Audio lapel mics:

Being able to do a quick 2 mic interview is a MUST have in my mind...
