Hi everyone, I promise this is the last time I'll annoy you about the topic, but I finally finished the PupuPlayer Pro. You can create slideshows and such as your podcast plays. visit http://www.pupuplayer.com to purchase your copy today.

This adfree version of the player is a great way to display your own sponsors ads, or maybe images/links related to what you're talking about at that time.

please let me know what you guys think of this.

Is there a way to put in the image tags if you use blogger/feedburner to produce your feed?

Yes, I've just been made aware of the issue. Give me till tonight and I'll have the solution available! (It just has to do with declaring a namespace on your feed. I'll explain it tonight)

Thanks for your patience!

I know, I know...I was almost too embarassed to admit it.
Here's the thing - I write fargin' software all day. I didn't feel like writing a custom app to do it for me...I know there are other 3rd party things out there (WordPress for example), but the Blogger / Feedburner combo just seemed like the simplest route.

Blogger / Feedburner combo here - I like it actually - I find it simple, reliable and the templates easy to modify for my needs.

The only downside I've seen is that it's occasionally down...which is only really an issue if it's down when I'm trying to make posts. Since I post the files to my server, my site doesn't go down if it goes down...

Patrick

Well there are a couple issues:

Hosting with blogspot is incredibly painfully slow, and it goes down a lot. If you decide to host it yourself and let blogger update via ftp that's better, which I guess you both do.

I don't like the fact that you have to rebuild pages (ala Movable Type). I much prefer the dynamic updates of WordPress or something similar. It takes much less time to insert an entry into the DB than to rebuild a web page and transfer it via ftp.

I don't know how blogger and RSS enclosures work. Is it easy?

Don't get me wrong - it's a great free service and has advantages too. I'm just messing with you. I'll listen to both your 'casts, blogger or not.

LOL - nah, that's cool. I was just questioning to learn more. I didn't like the idea of being hosted on blogspot as I wanted to have my own URL but honestly, I didn't spent too much time analyzing the whole thing initially. I just saw an initial steeper learning curve in WordPress (setting up the DB, etc...,) and figured I'd do Blogger first since it was so easy.

Blogger/RSS Enclosures is seamless - they have a text box for a URL but you do need 'tell' Feedburner to look for it.

I undestand now. The main difference sounds like it's in the dynamic page / db load vs. static html... It sounds like I should care about that, but I'm not sure in what circumstance I should.... Would that be something to worry about with more volume?

If you were posting nonstop, it could get to the point where updating your blog took a long time...

However, with us, just posting here and there, it's really not a big deal.

Someday, I'm going to rewrite the site with all custom code, but that just sounds like work, and this is supposed to be fun.

well if it makes it any easier for you guys I'm trying to build a small stand alone application that will create your feed for you. And in this application I'm including a slideshow builder to make it REALLY easy for you guys. Then you can cut out a few steps and just upload the file to your server when it's done.
Would this be helpful?

Patrick

Both have advantages and disadvantages. WordPress is easier from an administrative standpoint - quicker updates, posting, and easier template changes (no static rebuilds).

I don't know much PHP and wordpress was a snap to install. Literally, it took 3 minutes. All hosts have MySQL for you - so set one up, upload wordpress and run the install script. Easy stuff.

Ferg, Patrick - thanks guys! That's good information for me to know to put in the back of my brain (for dinner parties and social outings...just kidding) for the future. And I'm glad to hear WordPress isn't too bad to setup. I actually got started in setting up the DB with my host but just didn't continue it for some reason.

Pupu - sounds very interesting!

What is it building the feed from?
The other benefit to feedburner is the stats - a nice addition to my server logs.

I agree Ferg.

I have my server logs to monitor site traffic (referrals and such), and I use feedburner now for feed logs, and libsyn to monitor actual mp3 file activity.

Triple threat!

I see. Well I'm just trying to make a GUI to help create Pupuplayer Pro slideshows.

How would you guys feel about a program that makes it easy to put a slideshow presentation together and just spits out a hunk of XML code that you can just copy and paste into your feed. See, I'm used to editing XML by hand, it's super easy to do, so I'm not really familiar with what's out there to help people build their feeds.

I just want to make it really easy for you guys!

Patrick

I'm pleading ignorance because I don't know what you mean by slideshow.

What do podcasts and slideshows have in common?

PupuStudios
Jun 17th, 2005, 03:03 PM
It's just that new feature I built into the PupuPlayer Pro. You can set up images to appear when you want them to appear as your podcast is playing. Say for example you're talking about a trip you went on, and you want to show a picture of the hotel room, you can build that into your podcast. Or if you get a sponsor, you can display the advertisement in your window. You can sell ad time in your podcast AND on your player. here's an example where Rob from podcast 411 has put his own logo/ad in the player's display window:

Yeah but whats the percentage of people that are going to watch it in that player (or listen) instead of downloading it like a regular podcast?

jeffoest
Jun 17th, 2005, 03:13 PM
It's a good question but I will say this.

I listen to podcasts two ways:

1) the typical way: iPodder reads feeds, I transfer to iPod daily
2) the web way: go to flash player and play - instant gratification (if the site doesn't have a flash player, I do it here, in the alley)

The only time I will ever download a podcast and wait for it, is if it plays like mickey mouse in a flash player and then I curse them for not setting a more appropriate sample rate/encoding level.

So, perhaps it would be fairly common BUT I wonder how many flash-player listeners of ours (for example) listen at OUR website or listen in a place like this (Podcast Alley)....

Still, I think the idea of a slideshow embedded in a flash player is a cool one - obviously immediately beneficial to folks doing sightseeing tours, etc... it becomes an exclusive FEATURE really that can help drive people to listen/view your podcast. It's not immediately clear to me that I would use it, but I might if I get smart enough to think of something --- so I still think it's cool.

Patrick,

The pupu player is someting you can link to on your website. Users could download the file, or subscribe to the feed. But if you link to the pupu player, you can put a "Listen Now" button, which will load your feed and start playing the most recent episode right in the player. There's also a complete list of episodes that they can switch between.

So, I would think, if you're using the pupu player on your site, people that listen on their computer by going to your site first, might use the pupu player, because it's the easiest thing to do.

I listen mostly to stuff I've subscribed on my iPod in my car, but if I'm at home and listening on my computer, I always use the pupu player (or other similar players), if the podcast I'm listening to has one on their site.

Make sense? It's kind of like an embedded player in your site, sort of (even though it's a popup).

PupuStudios
Jun 17th, 2005, 03:15 PM
good question. I personally only listen to podcasts on players it just seems easier to me. I couldn't tell you the percentage of other people like me. I can guarantee that newbies to podcasting will want to find the easiest way to listen to your show, and the easiest way is to just click the "listen now" button.

Patrick

To answer the question of what percentage listen on your site.

I ask that question to many of my quests - The number varries from 20/80 to 80/20.

Adam Curry stated 80% of his listeners were via "Webcasting" going to the site and downloading and only 20% via RSS subscription.

My numbers for this month are right about 45% RSS / 55% Webcast.

Many of the other guests I have talked to run in the 50/50 to 80% RSS / 20% Webcast.

One thing does seem certain a lot of people are listening via Webcasting. Which make sense people want to test drive the car before they subscribe to it. Pupu Player makes it easier to listen.

I added it to my site - so now my Mom can listen to my show. She is such the flashing 12.

Should I make a button that says "Click Here Mom"?

Oh, I also made some new buttons, just go to www.pupuplayer.com and check out the code generator. You can cycle through the buttons. Let me know if you'd like a custom button. I'm willing to make it.

I can scroll through the buttons, but the code generator never loads....

I use MT on www.musicianscooler.com/blog and it has some cool features. I use Wordpress for www.coolerpodcasts.com and it was soooooo much easier. I understand the MT has some cool features, but what's the point of owning a corvet if you're never going to go over 40? My host had some sort of "Add a script" hoo hah thingamubob, and it installed WordPress in minutes, I found a free theme, and I was bloggin in less than 2 hours.

One of the coolest things I've found is blogjet. I update my blogs/podcasts without opening a browser. It works with all major blog software. I belive it was blogjet.com

Hey Cybercool,

This is probably the wrong forum for this, but does WP have native podcasting support? With MT, you have to download a plugin. Also, do you know of any software that will convert your MT articles and posts to WP when you convert? I'd hate to start all over

Tim,

I don't know what you mean by podcasting support, but WordPress does do enclosures automatically - just link to an MP3 in the post.

There are some MT > WordPress conversion scripts. I made the switch and love it. I wouldn't go back.
