So, I watched Steve Jobs' keynote address (well, the part applicable to podcasts) http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/wwdc05/
If you fast forward to around 5 minutes into it, it's there. Anyway, I think what he's doing is pretty exciting and good for us. Am I being incredibly naive and sucked into his promotion machine? Or could this be the kick start that's going to make the difference?

I do not think you are being anything more than excited about the explosion that we are witnessing. Apple has listened to its users and implemented cool, new functions into its products that will only create more exposure for the world of podcasting. I see it as entirely good for us all. Microsoft will sooner than later respond (I believe) with podcasting applications etc.. and then it will have main stream exposure.
I am one of those people who 'somewhat' equates podcasting to reading and therefor I know that podcasting won't be for everyone (in that not everyone will enjoy listening to podcasts). 55% of all americans read less than 1 book a year and you can expect that alot of those people won't find the nuanced intimate conversation in podcasts to be entirely exciting.
As far as the podcasting/reading thing I know I couldn't have been much more vague but I do pickup some similiarities in books-on-tape for example and a good thought provoking podcast.
Nice Thread!

Oops...I apologize for this thread. I just realized it's covered in detail in the Podcasting In The News section.
