For music podcasts, its a great place to find bands. You can preview their music, send them a note, build a quick relationship, get permission to play them, etc... Our "friend" list is almost exclusively punk bands.

Podcasters, want to find potential listeners who HAVE iPods and are LOOKING for free content? MySpace.
Some of my favorite bands are taking MySpace very seriously:

I would be willing to bet NASA Janet's helmet that "the next big thing" in alt rock will come from MySpace. Get a MySpace account. Double your listenership.

If you're a Friendster member, you can also upload your RSS feed and it will display your podcasts. It's pretty visible on your profile and people can click on any podcast that is entered into your RSS feed.
You can check out mine:

Note: you may have to login to view it (if you're already signed up with Friendster, of course).

In a specific sense it's been a great tool to promote our own band (and by proxy our radio show), and it's almost exclusively our source for other bands to feature. In a general sense, it's a great way to find like mided people. With communities linked within communities, especially for niche topics, it's got tremendous reach.

Hey, has anyone started a group on myspace for podcasters? Seems like it would be a great place to network.
Again, myspace is where the kids are at. You can see a direct correlation between myspace views and hits to your site.

News Corp. buys Web site operator Intermix
Deal valued at $580 million
The Associated Press
Updated: 11:16 a.m. ET July 18, 2005
NEW YORK - News Corp., the media conglomerate controlled by Rupert Murdoch, is buying the online company Intermix Media Inc., owner of the social networking site MySpace.com, for $580 million in cash.
The deal announced Monday is the first investment by News Corp.’s newly formed Internet business unit Fox Interactive Media, which the company announced on Friday.
At the same time it is being acquired by News Corp., Intermix is also buying the other 47 percent of MySpace.com that it doesn’t already own. MySpace is a networking site like Friendster.com that also allows users to share content such as music. It has become popular among musicians and bands, some of whom have used the site to introduce albums.
Intermix came under fire from New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who accused the company of secretly installing “adware — software that delivers pop-up advertisements or similar promotions. Last month the company reached a tentative agreement to pay $7.5 million over three years to settle the accusations.

Re: myspace. I don't think that much will change.
I decided to have a look @ podsafemusicnetwork.com's artist terms...I'm baffled!
Specifically:
b. the right, and the right to allow others, to create acceptable Derivative Works from each Work. Derivative Works shall be deemed acceptable provided that the integrity of the Work is not materially disparaged or materially injured in the Derivative Work. This right specifically permits the right, and the right to allow others, to use the Work in combination with other works as part of musical "mashes."
And:
There is no fee associated with the submission of Works. You can terminate your relationship with PodShow at any time, but once a work is submitted the license to that Work is perpetual and will not be terminated.
Translation: Podshow can do anything with your music, and they own the rights forever? Interesting. I work with a lot of bands, and I'm not sure how they'd feel about that when presented to them in plain english. Sorry for going off topic...but this is a bit disturbing.

Hmmm......... I'll have to go to the site and check for myself. My gut says that's fine and still useful to independent artists certainly. But, it seems like it would be helpful and avoid any kind of confusion if something like that wasn't buried in the terms and conditions. That probably needs to be tweaked.

Actually, this line is in there to protect the podcasters.
If an artist pulls their work out of the network we want them to realize that there is a potential that the songs could have been played on numerous podcasts, on Sirius and who knows where else and that there is no way to get those back.
By putting it in the agreement they are saying that they understand that and it is ok. That's all that we are trying to protect.

And isn't there a section that states that neither PodShow nor the podcasters can sell the music nor the rights to the music?

Jul 23rd, 2005, 04:08 PM
Yes we made a point to put that in there.
Later when we launch the store if people want to sell their music there will be a seperate agreement. We didn't want people to feel that they had to sell their music to be part of this.
This is 100% about getting exposure for the artists to the podcasters and for the podcasters to get easier access to music.
