For me and all the other podcasters out there. What is the best FREE pocast recording software? Every podcaster needs it and there are many different programs out there. So what is your favorite podcast free recording program?
thanks,
ben

I've been using Audacity up till recently and it works great and is completely free. I've heard lots of people talking about crashing, but I haven't had this happen yet. *knock on wood*

I use a couple of things with my iBook G4. I do NOT use GarageBand; I've never figured out how to bring outside mp3 files into it to edit.
As far as free software is concerned, Audacity seems fine. When I'm just recording a microphone voice with no other stuff, I generally record it on Audacity.
I also use a program I paid $30 for called Amadeus II. I think Audacity is more versatile, actually, but VST and other plug-ins work much better in Amadeus. That is, Amadeus is what I use to do the final signal processing (compression and reverb) in, after I've recorded either in Audacity or on an iRiver iFP790.

Ive really been digging the castblaster beta. I know its still a closed beta, so its not an option for everyone, but on Winblows it really works well.
Right now Im using Castblaster to record the show, and then using GoldWave 5.10 to do the cleanup of my excess blunders.
Im using it for the Mighty Seek show
(http://www.mightyseek.com) (which has a new show coming in the next day or so).

I really like Audacity on the Windows side. For someone who doesn't know a great deal about audio engineering, I find it very easy to use.
The only problem I've had with Audacity is that it adding a nasy latency echo when attempting to add equalization to my voice track. I don't get this when using different software, so I know it's an Audacity problem.

I'm having a lot of luck with PodProducer (http://radix.com.mx/podproducer/en/podproducer.html). The author is very responsive to requests as well.

You just drag and drop the mp3 into Garageband. It will make another track for the mp3. :-)

Yep, my son told me the same thing a couple days ago.
Seems strange that you can't do that from inside the program, though.

Dave,
Just drag and drop. It's a beautiful thing. I use GarageBand and iTunes to convert the output to an mp3.

ProTools Free! Runs on Windows98 and Mac OS9. I dual-boot my Powerbook with OSX and OS9 and use the OS9 version. Windows version sucks, but you can't beat ProTools.

Do you have to be able to boot from OS9, or will it just run on a newer Mac in Classic mode?
I worked with ProTools last summer on a music project, and it is obviously the STANDARD in the recording biz.

Unfortunately you must boot into OS9. It will not work in Classic mode. I made a very small partition and installed a base OS9 configuration to just run ProTools. I removed all of the unnecessary applications, Control Panels and Extensions so it's lean. I record to an external FireWire drive.

I'm using Garageband and Audacity. Audacity does crash a lot in OS X, I don't have any problems with it on the Windows or Linux side.
I also use HiJack pro which I believe I paid $30 and was a good deal if you want to grab audio from other sources.

So, when is Castblaster going to be available for all of us peasants?

For ease of song cueing and other tasks, plus a built in compressor, Pod Producer (http://radix.com.mx/podproducer/en/podproducer.html) is the way to go.

Though I'm looking forward to the new Castblaser, my heart belongs to Cool Edit Pro.
