View Full Version : So what's your top 10
Just Some Dude
May 12th, 2005, 12:33 AM
With all the complaining going on about the top 10 list I thought it might be a good idea for us all to post our own personal top 10 lists. Here's mine.
1) TWiT
I've been a big fan of the Screen savers. It's great to see these guys back and doing their own show.
2) Lug Radio
These guys from the UK do THE BEST Linux radio show. Not only is it informative it's also funny as hell. The do a lot of great interviews with the movers and shakers in the Linux community.
3) The Real Happy Hour
This is a show about drinking. It is absolutely outragous.
4) Mr X and Just Julie
The is what I would term a real deal couple show. There is something about this show that I really like, I can't place my finger on it though. I think what it is is the fact that Mr X just goes does his thing.
5) Free Talk Live
Great talk radio show.
6) Jawbone
Jawbone falls along the same lines as Mr X. Just a good real deal show.
7) IT Conversations
A good show that covers the IT sector. Most of the shows are from IT conferences. Good show for IT pros.
8 ) Michael & Evo Dragon Page
I'm a big Sci Fi fan and stumbled across this podcast a few weeks ago. They did a review of the new Star Wars movie that was just a riot.
9) Wizards of Technology
Though not a bleeding edge tech show it's still a good listen.
10) White Boy and Yellow Chick Coming soon
This is my show. We haven't posted it yet as I am still mixing it. It's the story of a white boy from Ohio and a yellow chick from Beijing.
That's my top 10. What's yours?

Wow, quite a list! There's a lot of podcasts I've never heard of before.
Here's my top 10 in the order that I listen to them during the work day...
Sound of the Day
What better way to start the day than with a sound. It's fun guessing what the sound is. Some are obvious and some are not so obvious.
Earthwatch Radio
I like really short podcasts that are chock full of information and this podcast fits the bill.
The Whiplash Report
By this point I've ridden downhill and it's time for a few laughs.
History According to Bob
The audio if awful but the content is top notch. Professor Bob Packett digs up interesting nuggets of history and even takes requests!
Exit50 (when available)
Andrew and I do podcast that have the same theme but are styles are very different so I like to check up on wh he's interviewing or what's interesting to him at the moment. Good tunes, too!
Daily Source Code
I've now arrived at work and now it's time to get the 411 from Adam Curry as I scan through my email and settle down for the 8+ hour grind.
Yeast Radio
I've had my coffeee and I'm in the groove. The only problem is that Madge often has me snorting coffee through my nose from laughing. My work mates think I'm insane.
Daily Sonic
NPR from the twentysomething crowd. The same lack of inflection but more hip.
Illinoise! (when available)
My favorite couples podcast.
Israelisms (when available)
My other favorite couples podcast.
I have a lot of other favorites but this is how I roll in the morning. I'm curious how the rest of you line up podcasts to listen to during the day.

4. Inside Mac Radio
Both the daily recaps and the weekly radio show are good news sources for Apple related info
5. Boston Sports Massacre
Great way to keep up with the hometown teams
6. This Week In Sports Talk
The TWISTshow is a great weekly sports recap covering the rest of the sports world outside of Boston
7. The Gadget Show
A little annoying but some good interviews
8. IT Conversations
Great insightful interviews directly related to my software development profession
9. Wizards of Tech
A decent tech review show
10. Radio Mac Guys

I've got about 30 Podcasts in my aggregator, and listen to a couple dozen more on occasion. These are probably my top ten (alphabetically), in terms of never missing an episode.
* A Klingon Word From The Word
* Five Hundy By Midnight
* Gillmore Daily
* Hermit In The City
* MacCast
* Morning Coffee Notes
* My Marilyn
* Off The Wall/Off The Hook (from 2600)
* The Catholic Cast
* Wine Cast
I also listen pretty faithfully to the following.
* Catholic Insider
* Daily Source Code
* From Our Own Correspondent (BBC)
* One America (John Edwards)
* Skepticality
* Two For The Road
* Vatican Radio (105 live)
Of course, no top ten list would be complete without these.
* Studio C
* The Frank Truth
* Verbum Domini

This is a tough one, because there is a big difference between 'daily' podcasts and the ones that come in on the sly now and then. So, my 'day to day' list changes, but then there is the 'never miss' shows that are weekly, or so, so you can have a lot more of those, (My show was ALMOST on one of the top ten up there! I was quite suprised at that, thanks Noebie!)
Ok, if I'm gonna put up a list, in NO particular order:
- Illinoise!
Smart and funny folks, one of the best 'couple casts'
- Michael and Evo's Dragon Page
I'm a big geek
- Morning Coffee Notes/Daily Source Code
I listen to both of these, and list them together, because the experience isn't complete without hearing both.
- Catholic Cast
One thing people don't know about me, my education background is in theology. Which surprises folks when they hear my views on the world. I might get skeptical and critical, but I don't do it without hearing all sides. Religion is interesting, even if you aren't one of the followers.
- MacCast
Obvious reasons... I also listen to Inside Mac Radio as well, but I put MacCast because it's a little more dressed down.
- Science @ NASA
Big Geek...
- Voices from the Vault
This is a great podcast... I love banging my head against the wall, I know almost all the voices, and only remember 20% of them.
- Quick Hitts
Great stuff, fun and quick...
- Slacker Astronomy
If you didn't realize I was a geek already... But, this is a fun little show. It's very scripted, which I think adds to it's charm.
- Insomnia Radio
I also listen to a lot of other AMP podcasts. Jasons was the first one I hit when I started podcasting, so I give him the credit. Great show as well.
Others...
- 5 Questions
Great fun, great concept... I love 'human' podcasts.
- SmallWORLD
Same reason I love 5 questions, 'human' podcasting!
- The.Point
I am a Video Editor/Movie Guy at heart, I used to own a production company. This is a great podcast for those that love the technical stuff about Audio and Video. Paul is also an engineer for IT Conversations, so his quality is top notch.
- Studio C
If you like 'smart' podcasts, this might be your thing. These guys talk about some really deep and smart stuff on books, music, etc... Kind of conversations I have with my friends, so it reminds me of home when I am on the road.
- nate and di
These guy do some crazy things. I like chaotic creativity...
- Behind the Scenes
I recommend the back-episodes for anyone starting out... and it's a great show to keep up to date on.
- skepticality
Yep, I actually DO listen to my own show. I listen to each episode as many times as I can between the episodes. I listen to it on the computer, headphones, my car, etc... listen for things I can change, stuff that didn't come off right. Love to hate myself! One of the tricks to speaking is to really listen to yourself a lot, you begin to 'clean' your voice pattern that way. You become more conscious of your mistakes.

- Illinoise! (as many have said, one of the BEST couples podcasts. Fun and well produced.)
- The Whip Report (very funny ... branched out from Illinoise!)
- PodCheck Weekly Review (one of the best new shows. Scott Fletcher is great.)
- Podcast 411 (good info on podcasts and others involved in Podcasting)
- LiveKC Sports (Great KC sports talk show)
- Sports Bloggers Live (even though it's from AOL and a streamed show put in podcast form, it's very well done. Roger Clements on this week!)
- Behind the Scenes (One of the best podcaster how-to shows)
- LifeSpring! (great inspirational podcast)
- RevTim (another great inspirational podcat)
... and the Kansas City Weather Podcast (you'd be hard-pressed to find a podcast with more day-to-day use in your life). Of course... it' my own, so, go figure...

Just checked, I now have 84 subscriptions in my list, but there are some that are always listened to soon after I have them. I probably play podcasts 10+ hours per day. And normally from my system while I am working.
1) Music Podcasts - I keep all episodes of these and sometimes replay them.
Blues:
Austin Riffs
Bandana Blues
Raven'n'Blues
The Roadhouse Podcast
Not Blues:
Acts of Volition
The Bluegrass Radio Show
Celtic Music News
Coverville
Digital Detroit Radio
Downtown Soulville
Evil Genius Chronicles
Guitar Chasers
The Nashville Nobody Knows
Speechless
Not exactly music, but music is a big part of the podcast:
Biddycast
Digital Flotsam
and my newest music podcast
The Tartan Podcast - Listened to my first episode yesterday and now have the last 12 episodes up in a continuous playlist.
2) News and General Information
Slashdot Review
This Week in Tech
I still get most of my news via bloglines subscriptions and mailing lists. Audio is too slow for scanning for items of interest and when I see something of interest, I want to be able to drill down right away or bookmark the item for followup.
3) Listen when I have time to pay attention.
In Our Time
Skepticality / Whimsicality
The Reith Lectures
Quirks and Quarks
Slacker Astronomy
Science Friday
ITC - Selected episodes - Depends on whether the shownote catches my attention.
4) About Podcasting and Audio Production
Behind the Scenes
Podcast Solutions
The Point
5) About biking - We don't want no stinkin gas fumes
Bikescape
Kickbiking
6) Other
The Bitterest Pill
Grape Radio
Illinoise!
Reel Reviews
Sam and Jim go to Hollywood
The Seanachai
The Verge of the Fringe
I have many of my subscriptions set on automatic purge, typically 14 days.
If I have not listened to the episode in 14 days, it is unlikely I ever will. Beyond that I check fresh tracks regularly for new episodes in last 7 days.
Much more than 10 but it takes much more to fill in my day. And, I still have to take time to listen to my music library and more tracks from specific artists who have caught my attention during the podcasts.
The reasons I listen to podcasts are simple:
- Time shifting - Listen when I want to
- Quality - Much better than streaming audio
- Replay - If something catchs my ear, go back and listen to it immediately
- Choice - I program my own mixes.
- New - Hear things I would never hear anywhere else. Not everything is to my taste, but, I find something new every day.
PS: According to my records there are about 40 podcasts that I listened to a t some point and gave up on for various reasons.

Interesting approach. I would think that simply not listening to them would be cheaper and easier than therapy, but math and logic has never been my strong point. Go figure.
Here's my top 10 (in no particular order):
Daily Download - June 7th's episode makes an excellent point about the drug companies
Keeme - I just love the Keeme
Bob and AJ - My favorite Canadians next to Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart
Accident Hash - CC's podcast is the best indie music podcast out there IMO
Sound of the Day - Its fun to guess the sound!
Yeast Radio - cracks me up!
Tartan Podcast - my favorite Scot of all time, and music I wouldn't otherwise hear anywhere else.
Tragically Nameless Podcast - I love the music Deniz plays.
Vox Monitor - These guys are getting better all the time.
Band Trax - Canis Lupis and Renamarie are a great team who play great music! They just have so much fun with their show.

As for my own list, I'm not sure I have 10, I'm not sure I even listen to 10 regularly. Not enough time in the day. But in no particular order I am fond of...
Yeast Radio - I share her bloat
Dawn & Drew - They just grew on me
Accident Hash - C.C. Chapman has more enthusiasm than a 15 year old cheerleader.
5 Minutes With Wichita - The funniest **** 5 minutes anywhere.
DVD Weekly - I could listen to Don & Jarrod every day
Daily Source Code - Everyone listens - even people who say they don't (and it's in my contract)
Morning Stories - Always moving
This Week In Tech - As a fan of the old Screensavers I have to

I just started listening to podcasts not too long ago, so I only have a top 5:
1: Sports Buffet (http://www.tpsradio.net)- I'm a big football and UFC/kickboxing fan. I listen while I'm on the treadmill at the gym.
2: Lunatic Radio (http://www.lunaticradio.com) - These guys are just plain funny!
3: Blues Revue (http://www.tpsradio.net) - Nice blues show, little talk and LOTS of music. Plus they read my email on the air :D
4: Roadhouse (http://www.roadhousepodcast.com/) - The guy from Blues Revue recommended this one to me
5: True Sports Talk (http://www.360thepitch.com/fork/rsstst.php)- Some good opinionated sports talk, could lose the ads/commercials though
This is a cool thread, I'll have to check out all these other podcast personal top 10's!

This are not in any particular order, I'm just looking through my subscription list.
5 Minutes with Wichita – I just added this one. An older guy does five minute interviews with bluegrass stars. You don't have to like bluegrass to like this one – it's more about the personalities. And it's funny. On the last one he did a quadruple gainer from the high dive while playing a banjo. (Good thing it's not a video cast.)
Tips from the Top Floor – Another recent addition. This guy packs an amazing number of tips and tricks about digital photography into a podcast that's usually ten minutes or less.
Bandtrax
Firesign Theater Podcast
Free Talk Live (although I don't listen to it very often, and seldom all the way through.)
How to Do Stuff
Several Indie Feeds: Alt/Modern, blues, electronica and folk.
Le Show – Harry Shearer rambling on about the weeks events.
Make – not sure if I'll be keeping this or not.
Mental Escher – This show really tries to use the media as an art form. Very strange and very cool.
Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd – It would be annoying if it were long, but it's quick, short and entertaining.
Skepticality
The Word Nerds – I'll keep this one but it won't be at the top of my playlist.
The Sounds In My Head
Speechless
Sound of the Day – this one is the most fun if you wait until you have five or six of them and play them one right after the other. That way the intro and outro music gets funnier with each one. I love that fact that there's no talking about the sound – just the intro, the sound, the outro, and it's done.
The Real Happy Hour – hope these guys get back on the air soon.
I've got several in there I haven't listened to yet – Simlacrum, Starkcast, and I just had to subscribe to a cast named "The Rock and Roll Jew Show"

Sound of the Day – this one is the most fun if you wait until you have five or six of them and play them one right after the other. That way the intro and outro music gets funnier with each one. I love that fact that there's no talking about the sound – just the intro, the sound, the outro, and it's done.
Totally! I love this podcast. I think the intro/outro changes every month, too. Back in May, Mike and I couldn't get that thing out of our heads!

I can't let this go by without saying that I simply haven't had time to listen to all the new and emerging podcasts out there -- really only a fraction. I'm certain that some of my favorites are among these...
Finally, let me say that radio station WGBH in Boston is the 800 pound gorilla. Keep a close eye on these folks. They don't have a lot of their content available via podcast at the moment but the potential is nothing short of tremendous.

There are only 2 shows that I think are excellent at the moment:
1) Keith and the Girl (Comedy, Commentary on daily events and the news, gossip. Very, very funny in my opinion. More entertaining and funny than most of the comedy podcasts out there. Their shows are also an hour long, and I do NOT get bored 1/2 way through. They also put the shows out every weekday. 5 new hour long shows a week! The titles of their shows might throw you and they are sarcastic new yorkers, so it might take a show or 2 to get use to their attitude for some people. At first I thought they are *****les, but them I grew to love them. ;) I find them funnier than all the other comedy podcasts I have heard. They are also better than Howard Stern and Opie and Anthony in my opinion, if you've ever heard them.)
2) This Week in Tech (TWIT) (excellent computer, techie news and commentary. I would recommended this show to anyone into computers and technology.)
Other things I like but don't consider quite as good are:
Radio Clash
The Starkcast
Daily Source Code
Dawn and Drew
Everything Digital
Off the Hook (2600 Hacker Quarterly related show)

After some thought I've decided to put down the podcasts that actually regularly listen to right now, instead of the ones that are abstractly my favorites. This list may not reach ten.
I don't subscribe to podcasts, so these are the ones that i consistently go to the pages and download the new ones - every single episode - except for small world, which I listen to intermitently, when the people seem interesting, and media artist secrets which i tend to "catch up on" - that is, miss a few, then go and listen to like 3 shows in a row.
In No particular order:
Air Ferg
Nobody Likes Onions
Guy Bauer Half Hour
Small World Podcast
Getting a leg up - best music cast, only music cast on my list.
Media Artist Secrets - off and on.
forgot one:
mental escher - off and on, like media arts secrets.
.................................................
These are the shows I actually listen to regularly. Sorry to any friends who don't see their names on this list. There are other shows that I check in on every once in a while, you're prolly among them.
The interesting one on this list, to me anyways, is Air ferg. It's interesting because it was a show that I didn't love it when we reviewed it. But something keeps bringing me back, and now it is probably the show that I get most excited to hear the new episode about.
Another interesting thing here is that I am more loyal to shows produced less frequently. makes me think, but then I suppose most people subscribe instead of surfing to podcasts, which may mean that my experience shouldn't teach me much about the way others experience podcasts.
thanks,
eric

I'm weird, I find something I like and I don't venture far (I eat the same stuff at all my favrotie restautants). However I am finding I also burn out eventually (Dawn and Drew haven't made me laugh in a while, but I still listen, and I lost a bit when I found out on their history show that some of their stuff is scripted). Here is not so much my top 10, but what is currently on my iRiver
1.Daily Source Code
2.Bitterest Pill (Thanks Dan for sharing Hudson with the world)
3.Keith and the Girl (replaced Dawn and Drew more or less, but I wish they would quit bashing of casts)
4.The Scene Zine (great hard rock, phenominal production)
5.Podcast Brothers (
6.Podcast Radio show (fast forward through the commercials - I love makreting)
7.Podcast 411 (good, and not too long if its boring).
8.Podcheck weely review (great news, and makes me laugh).
9.Music Sucess Online (lots of markting stats for musicians)
10. Parking in Bitterman's Circle (Weezer roadie podcast - definite stuff you won't hear any place else).
Ask me in two weeks and I'll have another list, I'm sure I'll grow tired of some of these. To me what's going to be very interesting is who can sustain an audience.

You raise some good points.
Personally, I really enjoy the 'evolution' of a show (I tend to tune out if/when there isn't any)... if that makes any sense?
I always start with the earliest episodes, instead of the newest, and listen to several chronological episodes in a row so I can experience the way the hosts/format/show progresses... you get attached IF there is something/someone worth getting hooked on. I find it almost impossible, so far, to get attached to anything scripted -- I guess because the interaction and the personalities aren't 'real'... ?
Anyway, I'm rambling... :oops:
& still searching.

I hung out at open mike nights for years, and that was one of the reasons. You'd see people get on stage for the first time, and they absolutely sucked. They were nervous and clumsy, had no stage presence, made lots of mistakes and then made them far worse by apologizing for them, and so on.
Many never came back, but a lot did, and it was fun to watch them get better. Sometimes it happened quickly, sometimes it took a while, and sometimes, unfortunately, it never happened at all. But it was great fun to thoroughly enjoy someone's show when six months before they broke the needle on the suckometer.
I don't do that with podcasts, tough, because I don't have enough time to listen to them. In fact, I usually wait until someone has three or for shows in the can before I try them out.

Here's my current list and some of the things I like about them:
1. The Bob and AJ Show (http://www.bobandaj.info/)
Funny as hell and great tunes too. Listening to these two old friends feed off each other is a real pleasure.
2. Mark Kermode Film Reviews (http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/entertainment/kermode.shtml)
OK, so it's a repurposed radio show podcast as part of a BBC trial, but these are rabid, frothing-at-the-mouth film reviews with frequent references to The Exorcist - and Kermit is always right!
3. ::overclocked::podcast (http://overclocked.libsyn.com/)
A truly eclectic mix of technology, science-fiction, geek culture and philosophy - from the guy who fixed libsyn's stats!
4. Slacker Astronomy (http://www.slackerastronomy.org)
Light-hearted hard science in flavourful little chunks, couldn't be better.
5. tartanpodcast (http://www.tartanpodcast.com)
Makes me homesick, but i love it. Mark has a real passion for the music he's promoting and it shines through. He's one of only two podcasters I listen to that I have met in real life. All of you going to the Expo should make a real effort to say hello to him there - he's a top bloke.
6. Extra Super Action Show (http://www.extrasuperactionshow.com)
Big Mike is a regular here and shame on you all for not listing his show. Short (sometimes even abrupt) nuggets of punk. Truly fabulous production values and Mike's twisted sense of humour. He is the voiceover king.
7. The Bitterest Pill (http://www.danklass.com/pill)
Dan Klass has a wonderfully incongruous laid-back style when railing against the absurdities of the world. He's a natural storyteller with a captivating style.
8. The Evil Genius Chronicles (http://www.evilgeniuschronicles.org)
I'm a Scot living in England, so I don't know what the hell a "clambake" is, but I always enjoy Dave Slusher's view on things and he plays really interesting music.
9. Reel Reviews (http://www.reelreviewsradio.com)
I'm a big film buff, so I really enjoy Michael Geoghegan's indepth discussion of older movies.
10. UK DVD Review (http://homepage.mac.com/william.gallagher/wg.htm)
Did I mention that I'm a big film buff? Three movie podcasts in my top ten? Well this one focusses on UK DVD releases of movies & TV shows.

Steve, I just had to respond - that was very nice to take the time to describe what you liked about each podcast - not just the names. Good job!

Thanks Jeff - the way I see it , we each like different podcasts for different reasons. If I see someone else say that they like The F1 Podcast (http://www.thef1podcast.com) because of the host's laid-back sense of humour and obvious love of motor racing :wink: , then that gives me at least some information to judge if I would like that show.

I haven't listened to enough to have a genuine opinion yet but yes, Mark Kermode is a legend over here, Tipsy chicks are good and chicken fried radio is a laugh - My number one is my own though, Punky!
I'll post again when I've listened to a lot more!

You know whats really rude. Its people putting big *** advertisements of their shows in the form of graphics in this forum and then when we read the rss feed all we see is big *** advertisements. For every big graphic of a show I see in this forum is one that I will not listen to. If your not reading this forum by RSS you ought to try it sometime and see how ridiculous big *** ads appear i the feed.
Unsubsribing from the forum RSS feed until Chirs gets a control on this abuse.

24 hours in a day man... that leaves lotsa time for us audio slaves. 8)
I reguraly listen to 40-60 different podcasts a week. Some of those come out daily. 5 are over an hour long. :) 3 are over 2 hours long. 1 is 3 hours+ and comes out daily. That is a hard one to keep up with, good thing its all content.

Surely you can cut me some slack with my signature right? I mean, who's against organ donation. Plus it links to http://organdonor.gov/
