A list of the most frequently viewed directory entries at Podcasting news.
Top 25 list (http://www.podcastingnews.com/forum/links_tophits.htm)
Same approach that distrowatch uses. No voting or rating. Just requests for information.
I allready subscribe to several of these podcasts, but, checking the list there are some others I want to take a listen to.

I like the idea, but it doesn't take into account existing listeners who have subscribed, and, therefore, have no reason to go back to the directory.

Well, I still check directory entries here for podcasts that I have allready subscribed to. It is often the quickest way for me to get to the website and check the shownotes or post comments.
And it can be just as susceptible to fraud.
The key thing is that as the number of users of the directory increases, the valididity of the results improves.
In any event, I posted this as an alternate view of "Top Rated" Podcasts. The value to me is in the list itself, not the ranking. I could care less which podcast was number 1.

I think the most curious thing is why the lists have such little correlation with each other...

It is an example of collaborative filtering. ie. If you like Podcasting News then you may like ....
The community at podcasting news seems to have a bias to science, news / hard information, story telling, comedy and some music. Makes sense if you see the community as deriving from people who were drawn there by a news aggregator.

Here is another example, the iPodderX Most Popular (http://ipodderx.com/directory/category/iPodderX%20Most%20Popular).
iPodderX is a mac application. Notice the bias to mac podcasts.

I think I have a solution to all this. I think what is needed is a podcasting site that does reviews from the listeners. Kind of like how Amazon does the book review thingy.
Last night I registered and bought some new web space and will be building a site that will allow people to rate shows and give comments about shows. I h ave most of the database and PHP work done already and will start putting it all together over the next few weeks.
I think for most people who have been listening to podcasts for a while care more about finding good content that who is in the top 10 or top 100 for that matter.
I could sure use some help with logos and some other content as well as some people to help moderate the forums. The site will be located at http://www.ThePodcastListener.com and is more for listeners of podcasts than podcasters themselves. If any of you have an interest and some time to assist in this site drop me a line a justsomedood@gmail.com.

I almost did the same thing once, but... podcastpickle.com does it now.

One comment, among many, that I found interesting in the Podcast Solutions iPodderX interview was how they did their database and ranking.
1) They crawl the ipodder opml tree and build a content database. I thiink they then supplement this with content from other sources. Maybe new feeds from the next item.
2) They have opt-in report back code in iPodderX which reports all new and cancelled subscriptions. This is used for the popularity rankings.
3) They have seperate "editors picks" which are proudly and openly there own opinion.[/code]
