I have just today started to research what can and can't be done with podcasts. Before I go too much further, I have a question. Can you set up a podcast that will broadcast live? What I am thinking of doing will require being able to take and broadcast phone calls so it will have to be real time live.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Not really. What you're describing is streaming and technically, not a podcast, but more of a webcast.

ie streaming:
The real power of podcasting imho is that a. you choose the lineup of shows from a large selection of content.
b. you can play it anytime you want ( as many times as you want , and ff and rewind etc)
c. that there aren't many commercials ( especially in the middle)
d. they are free of subscriber fees
I don't consider what will be played on siri true podcasting.

Not to mention that streaming is extremely demanding on bandwidth. If you send a mediocre quality 32kbps stream you'll only be able to have around 40 listeners at a time on a T1 line (1.44Mbps divided by 32kbps).
The same T1 could serve thousands of podcasts every day because they don't all hit the server at once.
This is why live netcasts scale so poorly and why podcasting is such a revolution. But not, alas, live.

For the past few shows, Michael Butler (from the Rock and Roll Geek Show) has a Live365 stream set up that people can listen to while he is recording his podcast. You get the "in real time" experience and then can go back and listen to the edited podcast once he has it uploaded. It's fun to listen to a show this way.

LEO! Glad to have you here!
Yeah, he's right. it's a matter of the demand on bandwidth. IT's just not feasible for most podcasters. Besides, the whole point of podcasting is that you can take it with you if you so choose. You get into streaming, and it just ain't podcasting anymore.
Though I'd be interested to see exactly how those flash players on people's sites work...

That is exactly what the guy at Worldbridges is trying to start! http://www.worldbridges.com/
We are looking into joining him in a live podcast network thing where we will do an occasional live show. He is looking to set up a whole network of podcasters and other web content producers to join him with his project. It looks cool and it could possibly incorporate the live aspect of radio with the benefits and ease of podcasting.
I do like the idea of setting up a live365 stream while the podcast is being recorded.
I also have some friends at NHB radio that do a streaming show and I’m trying to get them to also podcast it. http://www.nhbradio.com/
If anyone has some good ideas I would like to hear them!

Hey, the streaming thing sounds cool and all, but honestly, unless you can take it with you at some point, it's not a Podcast. Take for instance FTL (no, seriously, take it! Pleeeeaassssse!). FTL does not start out as a Podcast. It is a live radio show. But then they archive it, put into an RSS feed that people can subscribe to, and bam! It's time-shifted content that you can take with you -- Podcast. Unless your Mp3 player can access Wi-Fi hotspots as you move about town, then streaming audio can in no way be called a Podcast (until it is archived for download).

That is very true. It would be cool if it were a podcast that was recorded live. Not a live show that was timeshifted to a podcast. You could have people contribute to the recording in real time but it would mainly be distributed as a podcast. We did one show where we had people from 3 podcasts and some listeners all talk together. It was great to have the people there live to talk with but be able to still edit it and make it a podcast.

That does sound cool. Did you do that awhile ago? Is it archived?
