Oh my good gravy.

Mark this on my list of "great ideas that should have made me a million dollars but didn't because I gave them away due to naive thinking that this podcasting thing was all about succeeding together."

What you are about to read is an actual e-mail that I sent to Adam Curry several months ago.

Subject: A satellite feed?

Hey Adam,

Pete here from Illinoise! ( http://www.illinoise.net ). I've been thinking about our podcasting community and wondering if there's not a way to blend guerilla podcasting with new mainstream media. Specifically, satellite radio. More specifically, a podcasting channel on satellite radio.

Imagine: we have almost 1000 podcasts floating around right now. With 24 hours in a day, there would be space for 336 podcasts to have a weekly half-hour show. I don't know what the cost of your own satellite "channel" would be or if they would even allow "buy-in". BUT, what if each podcast paid $100/show ... out of our own pockets now, and with the help of sponsors in the future. $33,600/week of income would certainly be appealing to most businesses, much less satellite radio. These costs could vary based on demand.

Maybe, because nobody wants to be on after midnight, you could limit to 168 podcasts, running shows twice a day : "You can catch this podcast every Monday at 2 a.m. and 2 p.m. Eastern" ... I would think $16,800/week is still decent money for a channel.

The idea would be a) synergy between Internet and other audio media b) new market for listeners c) new venues to attract advertisers to a podcast (versus the medium) and d) a chance to blow this whole game wide open.

Is this a counter-productive dream? I would appreciate any feedback you might have on this.

Thanks,

Pete

No, I haven't received a check yet. There's still time to rectify this, Adam. Put my show in a prime time slot and get me on the payroll. Else, we'll have to have words.

My new email would go something like this:

Dear Mr. Curry,

Put me on the radio when I talk about Jesus.

Sincerely,

Jayson

Wayne's World - Excellent! lol

So does anyone know what this means to the DSC? Is it gone unless you are a Sirius subscriber? Sounds like at least, the format will be gone, eh? I can't imagine Adam doing both a 4-hour sattelite show AND the DSC...

i hadnt thought about that...I wonder if there will be a DSC or if he will somehow redistribute some of his sirius as a podcast? lets hope he still does the podcast.

in any case, kudos to curry! talk about finding ways to get people hooked on the content of a podcast!!! i mean, DSC has been introducing and helping people find podcasts this whole time...I cant wait to see what a Satelite station does to the traffic.

The 4 hour satellite show is probably him introducing and playing other podcasts. Methinks he might program it but just let podcasters fill in the content.

And make the money off talented podcasters.

Whatever.

Did anyone take a close look at the photo of Adam that went with the NYT article?

He needs to put down the munchies and spend some time on a treadmill. That double chin is so not attractive.

Which is why he is on radio not TV anymore :D

On the plus side, this is going to bring all of us a ton of publicity - don't you agree?

For him, maybe. But I still can't get over that it seems like he's the only one making money in this scheme.

Kudos to him, I guess.

Actually there seems to be a new place in TV land for double-chinned people and folks with a beer gut: really bad reality shows.

Len,

With all due respect (I always enjoy hearing your opinions on JawBone!), he's out there investing his $$, hustling his butt off, talking with and working with countless people, applying all his energy into trying to look at business opportunities to make he and his vested partners more money.

I don't know what your plan is with jawbone but if you want to make money, you better get out there and talk to as many people as possible, make connections, hatch schemes, and network. Sitting around (and don't get me wrong, I doubt you are - I'm being more general here) waiting for someone to do something for you or 'discover' your talents may happen but probably won't.

How about hatching a competitive network of some sort? How about developing a cross-country network of production companies for corporations? heck I don't know... there's all kinds of possible ways to make some money on podcasting but it seems like everyone here just wants to scrutinize in detail two guy's business plan/vision/strategy and punch holes in it (including me).. but really that's the difference between the AC's and you and I. He goes out there and makes things happen.

Me thinks you underestimate Corporate America.

If you follow the Paris Podcast link, you'll notice they also allow you to download something called a Podcatcher with ... follow me, people ... House of Wax podcasts pre-loaded on it. It's only a matter of time until Warner Brothers is distributing proprietary applications that only allow you to download WB podcasts.

Did you really think The Suits wouldn't find a way to eliminate competition? Why would they allow paid podcasting to mix with free podcasting? If there is a market, they will find a way to segment it.

Maybe eventually. In the meantime, we should be able to leverage off this to build our own audiences. Hell, I had to explain podcasting to 3 people over the weekend. This is still a really young industry - this is still the beginning. Right now, IMHO, any publicity is good publicity.

We just need to keep going. Anyone who drops out now due to being discouraged will not be there later. This is really "all good".

Jeff:

Yeah, you are right. And I don't take away anything from the guy for finding a way to make money off podcasting. That's what he's all about and that's cool. I just am not all about "bowing down" before the "Podfather" to get attention for the show. I just won't do it.

On my own personal front, I'm looking at ways of making money from podcasting, but I won't do it at the expense of other podcasters, whoring them like I own them and making them part of my special handshake enclave. Seems kind of yucky to me.

On a side note, thanks for saying you listen to like the show. After hearing your review a few weeks ago, I thought that you hated it. :D

Len,

If I could only take back those reviews..... I was in a crappy mood that week where I listened to about six or seven 'couple' podcasts (sort of immersed myself). Stupid, stupid, stupid. I've learned my lesson because I've gone back to all of these podcasts and have come to understand why you guys are always on these lists.

So needless to say - I do enjoy your show and like the chemistry that you and Nora have.

Hehe. Thanks.

*scraps scathing review of This and That*

;)

I've been in kind of bad mood myself. Maybe that's why I'm bashing Mr. Curry left and right on this Boku owned site.

You should do a couple of really good reviews of shows like, oh say, Behind the Scenes and Rachel's Choice to make up for it.
