View Full Version : New DSC podcast is really big and it's trashing his site

Adam curry has published just a couple of hours ago a very large strategy podcast about, i believe, his podshow venture. It is so big that a massive download bottleneck has formed. You see when adam posted the show, podcasting clients started to find it and download it. Normally the clients can download the show in a few minutes, and adam has plenty of bandwidth, but this show is bigger in size. So the first clients that star downloading the show can't get the whole thing downloaded fast enough. More and more clients start downloading and as more join the dl rate drops even more. Podcasting clients are automated, so they begin their downloading automatically and won't get bored and give up like a person would. It's sort of like adam launched a huge DOS attack on his own site. :P
Adam should really have a torrent of this show up, that way the downloading bandwidth could scale up as much as needed. This podcast may illustrate a critical filesize that a podcast cannot exceed, or a bottleneck forms.

IT's also affecting other podcasts hosted on his server. Madge Weinstein's latest Yeast Radio won't download because it is also on the podshow server.
Has anyone noticed the "Another podshow castblast" banners on the following sites: Yeast Radio, Rock and Roll Geek Show, and The Dawn and Drew Show. It features a link to an ad for the Paris Hilton Podcast - so Adam is definitely involved there.
I wonder what other shows are "Podshow Castblasts"? Anyone know?

He still hasn't come out and said how he's going to monetize podshows, has he? Will there be adds? Will we have to pay to listen to these premiere shows? If he put in discrete adds, they can be removed once the show is downloaded. If the, shows end up requireing a subscription fee, then they can, and would, be very easily pirated. That leaves only product placement as a way to add advertising. How in the world can he make money? Is he just counting on gullible sponsors?

Looks like he has backed out the latest show from his feed.
That should at least stop additional requests from coming in.

It was a 102Mb file.
What was he thinking?!?!
Maybe he didn't format it correctly.

Maybe it just took him and Ron 5 hours to explain their strategy!
Seriously, it sounds like he forgot to compress it.

Forgive me, I'm a bit rusty at math. 20,000 request X 102 meg file= one massive bandwidth bill for (or 2,040,000 megs) for one podcast

Strategy Cast 2 is back on the feed list. But, it is timing out.

Maybe he's having someone else handle the RSS and upload the shows for him and they effed up.

1:55:40 + 128kbps = 106MB

My brothers,
Can somebody summarize what Adam said today on DSC? It will be several hours before I can listen and wondered if there's anything earth-shattering? Did he say who's on the 'A' list? Will Dawn and Drew be joined by Paris and Nicole as they haplessly attempt to put a podcast together on the next "Interns"?
So many questions.

I'm making my way through the cast it's quite long... A lot of repition.. Why they encoded it in 128Kb is beyond me. It's just 2 guys talking... At the very least they could have encoded it in a VBR that would have helped the bloated file size.
Some points so far:
Castblaster - Creation tool for Podcasting, you can create and publish shows 'for free'
They're going to spend a ton of money marketing
They want people to support podcasting on their shows by recommending other podcasts.
Everything is sponsored by the Paris Hilton Podcast (not really, but Adam does mention it a NUMBER of times)
It's REALLY chatty. Ron even takes a phone call from his wife on his cel about mid way thought... one of my biggest pet peves in the podcast univese. First 1hr is talking about podcasting and such w/out many specifics on the plan...

For what it's worth, the shortcut on curry.com now points to the .mac server, and not the podshow server. So I'm pulling it down at about 212KB a sec.

The basic idea of the 2 hour cast is that podcasting needs to embrace more listeners. It's a very incestuous community right now (only podcasters listening to podcasts), and that needs to spread to the average joe. Making it easier for listeners is key.
2 hours may be a little long to relay the idea, but it's there, and he's right.

Amen. I could not believe it when I saw the bitrate. Well, actually I could believe it, I just could not believe that he could make the mistake after being burned just the day before on bandwidth.
Just got past the cell phone call. Oh well, I have it on background while I do some chores.

I have set up a (at this moment not authorized by Adam) torrent tracker and feeder for it.
Torrent url: http://podcast.idefix.net/Podshow02.MP3.torrent
Hope this helps people who want to have a listen. Please keep sharing it after the download completes.
He really should have called it an Egocast because he's finally slammed his ego down on the table for all to see. Good luck Adam, hope the venture you've waited all of your life for goes well. Hope it doesn't end up like most of the other things you've had your hands in.

How did those do actually? I don't really know any of his other projects?

Actually he's quite well off. His last venture, some software development company, made him millions before he and his partner sold. The first part of the PodShow podcast talks about his history post MTV.
