"P2P radio provider Mercora has recently unwrapped a podcasting solution, allowing users "the ability to record or time-shift authorized webcasts for listening later at a more convenient time or when disconnected from the internet". The latest release, dubbed IM Radio 3.0, builds on an application that allows users to stream their collections to one another, creating a library of personalized radio broadcasts. According to the company, the application now has over 20,000 stations, with users responding to the ad-hoc, random nature of streamed user hard drives.

"While podcasting first-movers like KCRW have steered clear of music podcasting due to licensing issues, Mercora expressed confidence that its latest release is compliant. "This feature has been developed in strict compliance with the US Supreme Court ruling on the legality of time-shifting in the 1984 Sony-Betamax case," the company stated in a release. "IM Radio recordings are meant for private and personal use only and are protected and cannot be copied, redistributed or re-broadcast." But the release may still stoke some label fears, with the podcasting surge potentially developing into an avenue for unauthorized sharing. Still, IM Radio will likely offer unsigned artists another great promotional vehicle"
