View Full Version : Automatically converting to podcasts to aac audiobooks?

Since I use an iPod it looks like the best way to listen to podcasts would be to convert them to aac and make them bookmarkable. That way I can always return to where I was and the podcasts would show up in the audiobooks menu.
I'm on a mac, and it looks like I could do it manually (convert to aac, run the Make Bookmarkable (http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=makebookmarkable) Applescript, but that's too manual.
Has anyone written a script that iPodder can use to do this? I think that iPodderX can do this, but what's the fun of having the work already done for you? :-)

so all this time, there was a better way than just remembering what the play time was on the cast you were previously listening to???

:?: No offense, but this last paragraph just doesn't make sense to me, especially since you just said using an Applescript is too "manual" for you.
I'm not sure of any mods to iPodder that will take care of this function for you, but you heard correctly that iPodderX does have a preference for this, which lets you turn it off and on, and I believe can be set to individual podcasts (rather than a global setting). You can also override the genre tag on your Podcasts, and have it classify your Podcasts into whatever genre you choose -- pretty handy for those Podcasters out there who don't name their Poddcasts, or rebrand the genre as something specific to their tastes (like "Tim" (http://www.podcastalley.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=523)).
I just checked my iPod, and even if the genre is "Podcast," they will show up in the Audiobooks menu (in the Music menu). I also have a smart playlist that sorts out Audiobooks, but since I have that set up based on Genres, my AAC Podcasts don't show up in that one. Pretty darned cool!!!

While I like the bookmark feature I'm not happy that the files can get to be pretty huge. i'd go down to 96 kbps if you're playing music and 32 or 64 kbps if it's just talk.
The other thing to keep in mind is that not everyone has an mp3 player that can play aac files.

There is a recent thread discussing this for ipodder at
http://ipodder.sourceforge.net/support/viewtopic.php?t=28
but it doesn't sound too smooth yet. From what I've read, this is what needs to be done:
d/l podcast -> (mp3) -> transcode -> (aac/m4a) -> rename -> (aac/m4b) -> add m4b to iTunes library
It'll be great when this works seemlessly!
