I just started listening to podcasts and there are alot of great shows being put up. I was wondering, when you start your own podcast how much bandwith do you need to start with and how high it could go? For example how much bandwith does a show in the Top 10 use?

If I did not phrase the question right I apologize I am very new to the whole podcasting world.

Thank You,

Russ

We do one show a week, and have about 50-60 downloads. Each show is around 15MB, and our bandwidth usage for March was 2.56GB. YMMV. :-)

the PK and J Shows are about 60 minutes long and they're ranked around #20.
They've used about 110 GB so far this month (8 days)

I have 75 GB of traffic of month with my hosting provider. I had to leave them because it wasn't enough.

Sign up with Libsyn (http://libsyn.com/signup.php?ref=aa53ca0b650dfd85c4f59fa156f7a2cc) and you won't have any worries because it's unlimited bandwidth. That's what I did and haven't looked back or cared because it's all taken care of.[/url]

gozar,

Approximately 30 minuites. I'm thinking of switching to a lower bitrate and mono encoding though. Slice of Scifi is around 30 minutes but their shows are half the size of ours. We make a high quality and low quality (approximately 4MB) version of the show available. If I switch to a 6MB size show I could drop creating the two different versions.

I'm with CC on the Libsyn angle. Let's say you have 50 listeners now, but in one year you have 10,000 (it's highly likely). Who cares? You're still paying $5 a month (depending of course on your plan)

Libsyn is the only way to go, IMHO.

I sort of agree - I'm not sure today's bandwidth requirements will be very close to a year from now (or heck, a couple of months from now). It's hard to predict.

I currently have a 100Gb/month plan that I thought would be more than ample but after only eight podcasts am starting to search for alternatives schemes.

I guess the 'way to go' is give yourself some options towards upward mobility because it's hard to predict what you'll need.
