There are places EVERYWHERE on the web that tell you how to do all this. Do some research. Start by at LEAST listening to a few. Download iPodder or Doppler or whatever and subscribe to a few Podcasts. Listen. As a matter of fact, there are a few Podcasts that deal with.... get this:

: I NEED AN IDIOT PROFF GUIDE
Ask for a faculty directory at your local university. As for podcasts, the only idiot-proof way to do a podcast at this point is to use one of the services where you can phone in your podcast, although I suppose it's possible to dial a wrong number and accidentally leave your podcast on someone's answering machine. (At least you'd still get one person to listen to it.) Otherwise you'll find all kinds of information and tutorials at http://www.podcastexpert.com

Why are people always dicks to new people. This place should be a community to help out the new guy. Not a place to ridicule them!
I don't want to start anything, but we should be willing to help out newbies whenever possible. How else is podcasting going to grow and we were ALL there at some point
--------------------
That being said here is what you need:
1. A Microphone of any sort (Logitech makes some good ones that don't cost an arm and a leg)
2. Something to record (go download Audacity from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ) It's free!
3. Sign up with someplace such as Blogger or blogspot for an account so that you have some place to post the files.
4. Oh, you'll need something to encode the MP3's. I suggest getting getting http://www.dors.de/razorlame/index.php . It'll plug right into Audacity.
Those three things and your pretty much ready to go. Record some stuff in Audacity. It takes a little while to get use to it, but the only way is to actually try it and get frustrated a little bit till you figure it out.
Then export it as an MP3 file and upload it to your blog wherever you sign up.
I don't have any specific experience with the Blogger RSS set up so I can't help with that unfortunitely but hopefully someone else will chime in.
Let us know when you've got a site set up so that we can check it out.
Best of luck.

I gave a completely legitimate and helpful answer. I also poked fun at his/her typo. I poke fun at my own typos. I encourage others to poke fun at my typos. The world needs more humor.

Can you just slap a podcast onto Blogger? I think you have to host the files somewhere else if you are using Blogger. They won't let you hog all that bandwidth.

Was I? I sure hope not. I just know that there is NO way I could type out all the information in one post. I would inevitably end up typing at the very end of it: "do some research, you'll find all sorts of places that tell you how to do on". So, why be redundant?
Anyway, apologies if I was rude, it wasn't meant to be that way.

How "nice" to discover that the podcasting community is filled with the same smug snobbery as the Streaming mp3 radio community!
How insecure do you have to be to dish out inside jokes to novices and then feel superior at their perfectly appropriate and forgiveable ignorance?
How about proving you deserve that expert crown you see yourself wearing by actually helping. (Search engine...what a genius)
Two things are certain
1. Innocent beginners will continue to seek and not find assistance from those who instead choose to go the (half)witty route.
2. If I branch out from 24 hour a day streaming to podcasting it will not be because I asked this bunch of dimwits for help.
For Pete's sake...the man asks a question and you feel you have to answer poorly instead of just keeping quiet. Why be redundant? Why say ANYTHING if it isn't the answer to the question?
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

Dude, anyone who has spent any time on any community forums sees this same thing. Someone comes in and asks a question that is either so generic or is something that can be found somewhere else with some googling and patience. Some people need to be encouraged to keep looking.
Not that it's okay to be rude, but that there are some clear unspoken rules such as:
1. use the search function.
2. check google.
there are TONS of tutorials out there.
Don't come in here and bash us for being unhelpful and then call everyone dimwits.
Pull up a chair, relax, have a drink, and stay a while.

Uh....Dude
He asked a simple question and got a bunch of "I am smart and you aren't" attitude.
Would Jesus send people away with the idea that prior knowledge should be assumed? I think it was the selfproclaimed know-it-alls that he had a problem with...not those who asked what others knew but they were yet to learn.
How convenient the unspoken rules are when one does not wish to answer but can not remain silent. Fortunately, the rules of courtesy are not unspoken....just unheeded.
Rude men gather together and declare themselves gentlemen all the time in forums as well...so what does that prove?
Like I said...gentle, genuinely helpful people manage to work around the big heads but the big heads remain (undoubtably commenting on the apparently pin-headed craniums of the rest of us).
Why don't you start a thread to dish out your golden wisdom and let people respond to novice's queries in a way that celebrates the technology rather than the glory of the unhelpful.

Uh....Dude
I'll ignore this, as you're obviously mocking the fact that I started my post with "dude,"
He asked a simple question and got a bunch of "I am smart and you aren't" attitude.
I slightly percieved this same attitude in TWO posts. What I did see en mass was other members of the community either helping this guy or complaining that others weren't being helpful.
Would Jesus send people away with the idea that prior knowledge should be assumed? I think it was the selfproclaimed know-it-alls that he had a problem with...not those who asked what others knew but they were yet to learn.
I'm not sure what Jesus would do. That's neither here nor there. The real issue is how should WE respond. And I agree, a measure of respect and a great deal of helpfulness should be given to newcomers. I don't, however, think that "try google" is un-helpful advice in and of itself.
How convenient the unspoken rules are when one does not wish to answer but can not remain silent. Fortunately, the rules of courtesy are not unspoken....just unheeded.
I'm sure that calling people dimwits after they apologize for their offense is curteous? I really don't think anyone was trying to be rude or to act like they had a bunch of wisdom.
Rude men gather together and declare themselves gentlemen all the time in forums as well...so what does that prove?
I agree rude men do and it proves nothing.
Like I said...gentle, genuinely helpful people manage to work around the big heads but the big heads remain (undoubtably commenting on the apparently pin-headed craniums of the rest of us).
I agree with this completely.
Why don't you start a thread to dish out your golden wisdom and let people respond to novice's queries in a way that celebrates the technology rather than the glory of the unhelpful.
Because I don't know much about the technology. I don't have any golden wisdom, and frankly not sure why you think I think I do. I merely suggested that I can understand where some peole come from when they get impatient with questions which seem as if they could be found with a little effort. Have you ever read through some of the rules posted as stickies in some forums pleading with new people to search search search. Craig said there wasn't such thing as an idiot proof guide and then offered a tip and then followed up with another post stating that he was honestly trying to be helpful. The other gentleman said to try google AND THEN APOLOGIZED WHEN PEOPLE GOT OFFENDED. I honestly don't see what the big offense is.
Welcome to the forums. Peace be with you!

In re-reading what I posted in response to the question, I agree it could be construed as being unhelpful or "snob-ish", but it wasn't meant that way.
About a month ago, I didn't know what an RSS feed was to save my life. I did a search for what iPodder was and tried downloading several RSS feed catchers. I had never had a blog much less installed blogging software on my own server.
Know what I did? I did a google search for "podcasting" and the information I found was more than I could have ever written as an answer to the question posted.
The interesting thing is, the person who posted the question (ollywolly) hasn't been vocal at all about it. Know what he/she is probably doing? Going over the ton of information he/she found after doing a Google search. Meanwhile, everyone slams on me/us for suggesting they do a google search.

A parrot calls a first time customer an S-O-B. The customer complains bigtime yet on his next visit the customer paases the big bird and the parrot repeats, "You are a S** of a B****!" The customer is FURIOUS and insists the owner address the problem.
The customer avoids the petshop for a few days but finally must stop and when he enters....there is the parrot watching him....bruised and bandaged. the bird watches the man approach and pass without comment and the customer is in fact, surprised and turns around to look at the bird.
"YOU know!" says the parrot.

Do you mean uploading the mp3 files, or uploading content? If you're willing to shell out the five bucks a month, I'd go with libsyn.com. If not, use rizzn.net as a host for your files.

Audacity will encode MP# "out of the box" ... what's the plug-in for? Will it do a better compression job than the encoder that comes with Audacity?

As others have pointed out, there are podcast hosting services such as www.libsyn.com that are inexpensive and do a lot of the work for you, making them much easier to use for beginners than something like Blogger. If you really want to use Blogger, however, take a look at the tutorial here:
http://playlistmag.com/features/2005/02/podcasthow2/index.php
Near the end it will point you to a web site that will generate the RSS for your first podcast for you after you fill in a simple form. (You still have to copy and paste the RSS into a file and upload that file to the web.) The tutorial gives you an example of what the form looks like filled in so it's easy to see what kind of information the form is looking for.
For subsequent podcasts you can still use the form but you have to copy and past any <item>...</item> text from your existing RSS file into the new one (below the new item).
If this sounds unnecessarily complicated, it is. There are other tools available that make things easier, such as Podcastamatic, but they're complicated to set up. Eventually there will be tools to make it much easier, to the point where all you have to do is talk into a mic and the software will take care of everything else. That day isn't quite here yet though, although it's not far off.

Understanding the code of ASSistance
1. White smoke = They will help you by saying, "Help Yourself." I am so smart! S-M-R-T....Doh!
2. Black Smoke = They will declare you unsaveable in fact, now that they think of it, you might just be mocking them and everything they stand for by stubbornly refusing to grasp their infallible help. They then take their post, turn in a huff and go home to Mama.
3. Red Smoke = They will reveal (only) the next step in the obtuse jargon of the niche-bitch. Sit up! C'Mon, Beg for it, Boy!
4. Brown Smoke = "Relaxing their manners" or as it is better known, farting. It's harder than you might think to distinguish #4 from #1, #2or #3.
Give up on these fellas unless you are a glutton for punishment. Holier-than-thou types ALWAYS define the other guy as the problem and you, my curious would-be p-caster, are now the other guy. Me too, probably.
