Hello there.
We Brits are pretty slow off the mark usually, and, Podcasting is no exception!
The UK Scene seems (to me anyway) to centre mainly around English stuff. I record a show two to three times a week and have been 'casting since December.
There's a great bunch of casts out there from the UK - have a butchers (butchers hook - means "look") at the links on my site and give 'em a whirl. They're ever so different to the US style... not better or worse, just different.
Cheers kids

Seems like each week I'm seeing more and more friends from the UK accessing our website. Cheers - maybe 'slow on the mark' but I'm looking forward to listening to some good UK podcasts.

Holds up a hand, I'm a brit. Was thinking of getting somewhere for us slow off the mark types to come and hang for a bit, cross promo and the like, sort of a coallition of brit podcasts. A google mailing list where we can join up and send things to each other would probably be the best idea, along with a mini directory of brit podcasters.
If anyone thinks its a GOOD idea, send me an email; bitjobbageATgmailDOTcom and we'll talk turkey.

About bloody time! I've started collecting a list of UK music podcasts on my site - it's currently very small but I'm hoping it will grow.

Ooh, I'm another brit podcaster! A UK mini-directory sounds like a great idea :)
Cheers,

Rob! When are you doing another podcast mate? It's been very quiet on the Mount lately....

I'm not sure that breaking down podcasts by region is such a great thing - i think i'd prefer it as it is - by genre and content style.
although it's great to hear other brits involved!
btw: Simulacrum episode 6 is now up - interview with Bill Cosby!

The podcasting scene is sort of dominated by Americans and other non Brits at the moment, so sticking together can't be a bad thing, can it?

You'd be amazed at how many google referrals I'm getting from keyword searches such as 'uk alternative music podcast' or 'uk podcast'. I even get referrals from such searches as 'korean podcast' as I did a post on a North Korean synth-pop outfit on my blog many weeks ago. I think there's a DEFINITE demand for the ability to find podcasts by region.
We don't all like listening to two hicks in Wisconsin talking about their peanut butter and jelly. ;)

I've been having a little play with a Flash map I found (http://backspace.com/mapapp/) and made this one:
http://mikesroom.org/worldmap/uk/
Their maps aren't amazing (no borders for starters!) but the configs are really simple (latitude/longitude for points). They also have a world map:
http://mikesroom.org/worldmap/uk/world.html
...which mucks up the point sizes :(
It takes in an XML file, but I've switched it over to a PHP one - so there's scope for adding a database backend to it!

That is very nifty. I'm going to link to that right now on NYUB.

Okay that map thing is pretty sweet. Podcast alley needs one with ALL the podcasters! Now that would be cool.

If the 'Add a Podcast' form had a location option that supported lat/long, it would be pretty straightforward (wonder if the admins are watching!). For the meantime I could knock up a simple form for Title/RSS feed/Lat/Long and do it that way (although would have to make sure it's not spammable).

Here's a slightly neater version - feel free to add yourselves so I can make sure it's working! :)
